Is there a known fix for small holes in leather steering wheel cover i.e. to keep them from getting larger?

 

really light sand paper can be used to smooth the leather and get it so that is will not peel, I mean really, really light 500-1000 grit. I used to do that with my combat boots after beating them in the field (which I did very rarely).
