A Vespa Mandarina (Hornet)

I lived in Japan for four years and there they had these hornets called "suzume-bachi" or "sparrow wasps". they were almost the same size as sparrows and insanely mean. I taught at a high school for part of the time I lived there and when one of my fellow teachers was stung, he had to take a couple of days off to heal.

Luckily, I avoided any run-ins, but your pic reminded me of those crazy things. I'm fine with our lazy bumblebees...
