DC metro area does have its bedroom communities. People come and go all the time because of the government.

Having said that though, I've spent about 3 years now in a very nice apartment complex next to Ft. Belvior (about 8 miles south of old town). I have had no issues with safety, security, or parking my car. In fact, it's mostly military folks living here due to the very close proximity of the base. And while it's maybe a quarter mile from Rt. 1 (a very busy road), I'm surrounded by trees, so it doesn't feel like I'm only a quarter mile!
If you want, send me a PM and I'll put together a 'Welcome Aboard' package with local apartment guides and whatnot and mail it over!
-Paul!
Also keep in mind how long of a commute you want to do and also if you have any pets.
I live in a new apartment complex in Stafford and commute to Alexandria everyday (about 5 minutes from old town). My commute everyday is about 30-45 minutes depending on traffic. I highly recommend the areas more south like Stafford since you are still close to everything but there isn't near as much congestion. PM me and I can give you more details and maybe help you look if you need any.
Welcome to the area.

My advice is to live as close to work as possible even though it may cost more. DC commuting can be a nightmare, even though I only live 5 miles from work in downtown DC it still takes me about 45 mins to get to work due to the joys of public transportation, but it's free for me and saves wear on my MINI so I don't mind it. There are some decently priced places in and around Alexandria and most apartment buildings will have some parking available. I live in South Arlington right on the border of Arlington and Alexandria and my rent is downright cheap for what I get (but I do have 4 roomates in a big townhouse). I suggest looking in South Arlington, Shirlington, Crystal/Pentagon City, and Alexandria (but away from Old Town, unless you can afford it). If you want to go a little further, Ballston, Clarendon, and Rosslyn are all good areas but are also a little pricier. Again, I highly recommend trying to keep the commute as short as possible, and I don't recommend living south down the I-95 Corridor, 95 is constantly jammed...
all great information guys. i will PM you later tonight. bascally where i work currently i drive 35 min on the freeway, so i am no stranger to the commute. i would like to live a little outside the city but i am up for anything. most important is definitly having a parking spot that isnt on the street!! and a hose connection SOMEWHERE lol
