"The Ultimate Driving Road in the Greater DC Metro Area"

Since I've joined DCMM (actually, even before that ), I've been driving throughout DC metro area and beyond. I have enjoyed exploring miles and miles of great new roads that I've never been on before.

Now, just for fun and sharing our experience, I would like to hear which roads you consider to be the best driving roads in the greater DC Metro area.

Here is what is needed:
  1. The roads should be within a 100 mile radius from downtown DC.
  2. The roads (or part of the roads) has to be at least 10 miles of un-interrupted fun factors. (Try to string together at least 10 miles of roads with uninterrupted MINI fun - meaning lots of twisties, scenery and good speed (less traffic, etc.).
  3. Please include the reasons why you feel that these are the "most seductive" roads in your mind. Share your motoring experiences with us!
  4. Rank the roads on a scale of 1 to 5 (with a 5 being the highest) for the following categories: Difficulty (twisties, elevations), Scenery, Road Condition and Speed (fun factor ).
  5. Make sure to provide for us directions and/or a map!
You can submit as many roads as you like for the "Ultimate Driving Road in DC Metro" experience.

July 8th will be the last day for entries and we will announce the winner of the online poll at the next "MINI of Annapolis" breakfast meeting on July 19th.

Rt.77 & Park Central Rd., Thurmont, Md.

One of my most favorite roads in the area is the road that go through Catoctin Mountain National Park, Thurmont, Md. (near camp David ) Less than 70 miles from downtown DC.

My route will start from west of downtown Thurmont on Rt. 77 & Pryor rd (Parking lot next to Frank Bentz Memorial Lake). Going west on Rt.77 into the Park, through twisties and along the scenery view of beatiful Big Hunting Creek. There are lots of twisties and varies of elevation. It is really fun to drive. Best to go during weekday (or weekend at early morning or late afternoon hour). There are parts of the route that go near camp David, best to check with the park website for road closure here.

Even at speed limit, the roads are so much fun to drive. I love to drive during the early round w/ no traffic and wow, what an experience. Go there and try to push your MINI a little bit and you will know what I mean.

There is a good place for lunch and dinner in the area called "Cozy's restaurant". http://www.cozyvillage.com/
It is also welknown among DCMMers as well. Highly recommended.

Summary: 10.4 miles (~30 minutes)

@ 0.0 / Depart Frank Bentz Memorial Lake SR-77, Thurmont, MD 21788 on SR-77 [Foxville Rd] (West) 4.8 mi
@ 4.8 / Turn RIGHT (North) onto Foxville Deerfield Rd 0.8 mi
@ 5.6 / Turn RIGHT to stay on Foxville Deerfield Rd 0.2 mi
@ 5.7 / At Park Central Rd, Sabillasville, MD 21780, turn RIGHT (South) onto Park Central Rd 4.7 mi
@ 10.4 / Arrive Catoctin Mountain Park Visitor center on Park Central Rd. and Rt.77.

SUMMARY
Driving distance: 10.4 miles
Driving time: ~30 minutes
It is fun enough for just go there for 2 or 3 loop runs and a lunch cozy's.

My rating:

Difficulty: 4
Scenery: 3
Road Condition: 4
Speed/fun factor: 5
