Top Gear Season 10 Episode 1, best driving road
we have some pretty spectacular roads here in california: www.pashnit.com
not as *majestic* as that one in italy, but still pretty sweet

i'm biased
through '80/'81 I rode the Great Ocean Road from Geelong (west of Melbourne) down almost to the Apostles - every Sunday morning.
in '87/'88 I joined the "Sunday Morning Ride" [an institution since 1957] from the gas station at Mill Valley up to Point Reyes for breakfast - again, every Sunday morning
there are so many beautiful roads, but those two have to be top ten material. I wonder if either made the list...

At least in a MINI you wouldn't need a support vehicle to follow you through remote mountain roads with loads of extra fuel. They showed the Lambo running out of gas once... but I'm sure it happened many more times off camera - at 9 miles to the gallon
. The Stelvio pass does not look like it has too many fueling stations on it, or anywhere near it.
The Stelvio and Gavia passes are also quite famous as the site of a particularly brutal stage of the 1988 edition of the Giro d'Italia bicycle race, which blanketed riders with snow. Andy Hampsten eventually won the race overall, the first and only time the race was won by an American.

Uh, yeah.
Me and another NAMster just made a 4 days, 1000+ mile swing through the Alps -- Minis in the Alps 2008. And by"just made" I mean it was this weekend. And yes, we hit some of those exact same roads (by accident, I suppose, since we'd not seen this episode!)
It was..... insane. Amazing. Stunning. Perfect motoring.
I have a long narration about our adventures, here.
