Volunteers for Ride for the Feast 2008
Volunteers for Ride for the Feast 2008
Howdy again, it's your friendly neighborhood miniglenn! Did you miss me?
I've been busy these last several months in the world of flat-track roller derby and haven't had much opportunity to motor (well, roller derby is like motoring, i guess, but on 8 wheels instead of just 4), but I hope that's going to be changing soon!
Anyway, there's a little bit of a backstory with this sudden post, but it does have a point:
Several months ago I started taking a photojournalism class, and one of my assignments was to photograph a community or a sporting event. I turned in some photos of the Charm City Roller Girls (CCRG) and my photojournalism instructor went bananas and had me photograph the girls ("the behind-the-scenes of roller derby") as my term assignment. That led me to be one of the league photographers for CCRG.
Through CCRG I met Lisa who is one of the fans of the league. She knew through the league that I do photography, so she asked me to photograph this event called "Ride For The Feast" since their usual photographer wouldn't be able to make it.
What is this Moveable Feast / Ride For The Feast?
Moveable Feast is a sort of meals-on-wheels that delivers to people with HIV/AIDS or different types of cancers in the Baltimore area. Here's a good description of what they do. Ride For The Feast is their fundraiser. It's a 140-mile bike ride from Rehoboth Beach to Baltimore over a 2-day period. This was the fundraiser page for last year, and here's some of my photos of the event.
Anyway, a few months later I was talking with Lisa about my MINI and DCMM and happened to mention MINI USA's Motoring Hearts program, and that got my wheels turning -- for Ride For The Feast, different groups volunteered to help out at different checkpoints (the checkpoints are about 10 miles or so apart): they'd cheer for the bikers on their long trek as they'd ride into the checkpoint, help give out water and protein bars, check off the riders to make sure there weren't any stragglers missing, etc. They also had "SAG" vehicles (what the "SAG" stands for I've no idea) that would ride along to keep an eye out for people who had broken down or needed water or other assistance. I suggested to Lisa that DCMM might be interested in helping out in some way and she thought that'd be a great idea.
The planning for 2008's ride is just getting underway (they're having a planning meeting tonight, actually), and I mentioned the idea again to the ride chairwoman and since they can really use the volunteers she thought it'd be a great idea if we could help! Here's some of the details that they mentioned to me...
From Lisa:
And some more details from the chairwoman:
So how about it? Who'd be interested in helping give people a warm MINI welcome at the end of the first day? Or if you've got a bike rack on your MINI, who would like to ride along as a SAG vehicle to keep an eye out for trouble? It's a good excuse to clean your MINI up, honk your horn to encourage the riders, and help some do-gooders and have fun doing good!
And don't forget the finish-line party and barbecue at the end!

I'd like to get an idea of how many folks might be interested in helping out so I can let them know, so let me know in the comments if you'd be willing to help on either Saturday and/or Sunday, and if you've got some way of carting a bike with your MINI. (I would have made this a poll but the poll options seem to have disappeared??
)
And if you've got any questions that I didn't cover, let me know too!
I figured I'd ask now so that they can plan accordingly, and then I guess it can be stickied closer to the date of the event.

From Lisa:
I would think that we'd like to have 2-3 or maybe even a couple more of the Mini people riding along as SAG vehicles for either both days or one or the other day and then, if there's enough interest in your group, also have you guys man a pitstop (maybe the overnight stop at Chesapeake College where you could park the cars easily?). Does that sound good to you?
Thanks so much for your interest in helping out with the Ride!
As Lisa said, it would be great to have a few of you guys (with bike racks) act as SAG vehicles. SAG vehicles loop around the ride route keeping an eye on the riders looking out for any riders who need transportation to a pit, tech support, medical attention, water, etc. Basically, when riders are on a long stretch of road in the middle of nowhere 10 miles from the nearest pit, SAG vehicles are their connection to help.
The ride starts at 8am on Saturday morning in Rehoboth, and we end that day at Chesapeake College, just on the other side of the bay bridge, usually around 6pm.
If a few of you (I have no idea how big your club is) could also staff the pit stop at Chesapeake College, even better. The college is our overnight location, so all of the riders end up there at the end of the first day. Our first Ride committee meeting is tonight, so tomorrow I should be able to give you more details about what kind of help we'd need at the college.
The ride is Saturday, May 17th - Sunday May 18th. Sunday we start at Sandy Point State Park @ 9:30a.m. We ride on roads for a few miles, then hop onto the B&A trail until we get to Linvale (Lindale? Lanvale?) Middle School, right by the airport. From there, we're back on roads again until the end.
The need for SAGs is greater on the first day because we're riding a longer distance, but we still need a couple on the second day as well. And of course, all volunteers are welcome and encouraged to be at the finish line party on Sunday.
