Sport suspension needed to compete?

So I was reading in the general section and nobody seems to know anything about the sport suspension. Is it stiffer springs and thicker swaybars or just thicker swaybars? I hope the SCCA crowd knows the difference. Basically if you just get the base suspension and throw on a set of Konis will the car still be competitive with the sport suspension cars with all else equal?

Are there any G-stockers without sport suspension doing well out there on a regional/national level?
