Turbo Extremely hot after shut off normal?
Hello folks,
I picked up a 08 MCS about 2 weeks ago. After about a 30 min drive last night, freeway, not really pushing the boost. I shut off the car as normal right after I pull it into to garage. I then accidentally touched the hood scoop. Literally less then 2 second, I have burned my hand. It's extremely hot, I mean feels like is well abovw 200F. I pop the hood and it's from the turbo and exhaust mod. And it continued that way for atleast 30mins. Is that normal? I took the car out again, it drove fine, and I let the car idel about about a min when I park again, and it's still quite hot. I notice the scoop is made out of platic, and the top is slightly bent, imagine it's because it's too hot. Is it normal? The car 40k btw.
Thanks for any input, will be calling dealer soon.

They have had issues on the turbos with heat. Do a search and you will find pleny of threads. Several companies offer heat shield to prevent the hood scoop from warping becasue of the heat. I think that was fixed in 2010. My new 2011 JCW is very differert than my 2010 S. Even in the cold when I shut it off in the garage the fan comes on and you can here the pump running circulating coolant through the turbo to cool it off. I have not timed it to see how long it runs yet. The fan in my 2010 never came on even in the summer in Seattle. I never heard a pump running either.

Yes this is normal. A turbo takes hot exhaust to spin a turbine to force cooler air into the engine. So yes, it should be flipping hot. Do not touch it.
As for the hood scoop that is a point of contention. Mine was warped and i was able to upgrade to the carbon fiber model for $100 installed. Some others have had theirs replaced several times.

After some spirited driving, I always hear the fan cooling off the turbo even in the winter months. It's very noticeable in my garage.
I have never had a hood scoop problem. I removed the original scoop a few months after getting the car and ran with the JCW CF hood scoop for about 1 year. I have had the M7 Vortex II scoop in CF on my car for almost a year. No issues with the M7 scoop.

That is rather odd. That has never happened to me and I do have a rather large opening in my hood with the M7 scoop.

There might have been some circulation going on but I think I only heard the fan come on once in a year parking in my garage. That after a very hot day and a fast ride home. The circlulation on the JCW is very noticable. The fan is very loud. Between the two of them you would think the engine was running.
I run a turbo timer on my diesel truck. Run in for a 2 minutes if the temp is high when I stop. Lots of time just rolling along down hill to my home for 1/2 mile or so in neutral and she is fine. Have Exhaust temp gauge which is a must for hot tunes.
A few more gauges would sure be in order on the JCW. Boost and Exhaust temp would be nice. Anyone know what they cost from the stealer installed.

Any turbo will get hot, totally normal.
You might also want to check the hood scoop grill, some had holes & some are solid. The the one with holes will let in more cooling air, & help cool off that area.
The other thing to do, is drive the car lightly for the 5min, then let it idle for 1-2min before you shut it off, this will help cool the turbo a bit before shutdown.

"bout 1800 degrees. Yea a little hot. It is a turbo. What do you expect? Oh, hood not to melt. I forgot.
In the pre-computer days, we bought controllers from Jacobs that would not let you turn off the car until the turbo spun down and cooled off. Modern turbo's like ours have water jackets to keep the oil in the bearings from turning to coke. Instead, we just coke the intake valves because they did not put a vapor separator on it. My 09 grill has about half the honeycomb open. I have thought about cutting the rest but airflow is not always what you think.
