True. Just something that springs to mind - isnt the saying 'once burned, twice shy' ? lol

Maybe the R56 boot is somewhat bigger than the R53 but Ive never struggled to reach anything in the boot in my mini - its not exactly big if it is that far back why not go in from the driver/passenger doors and push it back???

Its good that BMW have gone to the lengths of providing the shorter version as people new to minis may not think about the potential risk of burns but perhaps it should just be an option... (or that they should have thought about it during the design stage!)

Just my thoughts....

I did not want to fight with anybody, nor step on all the toes, all i am saying is that in USA their has been hundreds of thousants of MINI's sold and now becaus of 4 cases of people being burnt by something that is obviosly hot by the exhaust they change the pipes and have a official recall.

I also never said that i have not been burnt as it happend alot working on cars. but i don't go and sue everyone because of a few burns. that was just my opinion, don't read stuff that i didn't write.

And lastly i concluded that it has been done and can't be changed.

So sorry for thinking it is stupid to sue someone for a small burn mark. Use a band aid.

now if the war is over that should never have been started can anyone tell me if the r56 pipes fit on a r53?

Already changed out my whole exhaust and the tips on it stick out even further.

Not sure what they could really do if you refuse.

safety come first before look.

i am glad to have my tailpipe being 2 inches shorter at the "recall" service in order to avoid any incident.

i am just doing a favor for other kids' safety (including many nieces & nephews of mine) come first before my "look" tailpipe. it is not like it would short my long gun = reducing my masculinity? come on. i mean, will people see your car and scream "my god, your tailpipe look shorter and funny". no one notice the difference but only you as mini owner knows the difference.

btw, it is not nice of anyone to mention like it can be done putting "band aid" on their belittle burn skin cuz that person does not know the whole story of other victim's side.

Yeah, I didn't realize that those were that bad, sorry about the quotes. I hadn't actually seen pictures. Those are pretty bad.

You know, I used to have custom exhaust on my old truck, and the tip suck out from the roll pan about four or five inches. I can't count the number of times I touched it with my leg right after driving it. And I never got burned that badly. Which really makes me wonder what they were doing to get those burns. I mean they would have literally had to just press them down on the tip. I'm not saying it wasn't an accident or anything, but it does make one wonder.

Regardless, people should have enough common sense to try and stay clear of them. That's just carelessness on their part. It's not like it's a big secret that exhaust tips get hot. Like someone else said... are we going to sue the car company if we smash our finger in the door?

People need to start taking responsibility for their own actions. Get burned on a hot exhaust, range top, motorcycle, BBQ you learn not to do it again. Enough of this nanny government trying to protect us from the bottom 10% of the population.

My question is, do they put NEW chrome tips on there or just shorten the pipe and put the old ones back on. If it's the latter, I'm going to tell them NOT to do it.

No, I heard BMW issued a TSB about that.

I think the SA and tech are to take you out behind the dealership and beat you with reeds.

You know what, these guys may have something here...

My hand slipped off of a Craftsman wrench the other day and I cut my wrist open on the dust shield of our Land Rover. I think i'm going to sue Craftsman for the faulty tool, AND Land Rover because the edge of the shield was sharp and not rolled! Brilliant! I'll never have to work again!!

Its common sense, pal. Until people get some again, that's how its going to be.

I just got a letter in the mail today for this. If I have to get it do I will. I looked at those pitures of the burns and I do not doubt it happened. The first time this recall story came around I tried something. For 4 straight days every time I got out of the car I tested how hot the pipes were. Mine were never that hot. I am not saying the others are lying, but my car must somehow be different.

Me and one of my colleagues in the Psychology Dept. were just looking at some of the photos. The two that were posted with the burns on their shins we get... reaching into the boot to grab something or whatnot. But the other two had burns on the side or back of their calves. For the life of us, we can't figure out what they could have been doing to get burned. We even tried to recreate it. I'm REALLY curious about those two. Again, not saying it wasn't an honest to goodness accident, but seems like it would have had to have been pure carelessness.

It is a mandatory recall on the tailpipes. MINI is labelling them as defective parts and is supposed to be sending out letters to all S owners, letting them know that at their next scheduled service, the tailpipes will be replaced, weather they want them or not.

http://www.motoringfile.com/2009/02/...now-mandatory/

Don't you guys read motoring file?

I have a feeling, if you don't get those tailpipes replaced, MINI will void the warranty on your car. That's what Toyota did if you failed to go in to have service done for recalled parts...

Yes, they just replace the tips with shorter ones. Didn't bother me any, my old ones were beyond cleaning anyway.

sorry, but it is MY vehicle. I own it, so no company can force me to do something I own.

Well sure you can... but they don't have to cover YOUR vehicle under THEIR warranty if you knowingly refuse to replace known "defective" parts.

I'm not saying I think this is right, I don't, but it is the way things work and people should be aware that they are risking losing warranty coverage if they refuse to make repairs for recalled parts. My warranty on my 2008 says that it will not cover the vehicle if the owner fails to maintain the vehicle properly and since the recall is mandatory, I suspect MINI would argue that you have not properly maintained the vehicle if you do not have those tailpipes replaced.

On Motoring File there are a few comments about the JCW Stage 1 pipes not being included in the recall. Has anyone seen that in writing from MINI?

That would be stupid, but I bet they can do it. At least on the warranty of the exhaust itself.

I agree. I don't like the new shorter tailpipes on the S and wish that stupid people would stop doing things like... ignoring the fact that there are hot exhaust pipes by their shins while they are wearing shorts... but from what I've been reading, now that MINI has issued a mandatory recall on those parts, if they fail to replace those parts, even if the owner refuses to replace them, MINI can be cited under the motor vehicle safety act. So I don't think they will let you get away with not replacing them unless you have an aftermarket exhaust. If you have an aftermarket exhaust, it's no longer MINI's problem.

How about the frozen throttle bodies, cold start problems and defective clutches to name a few? Oh those don't get the time of day by NHTSA and MINI?

Amen. I also wonder when they're going to issue recall notices for the sunroof issues on the 2nd gen cars, as well as when they are going to issue a recall on the power windows that flake out and roll themselves down when it's 20 degrees outside and you're on the freeway.
