I've found some interesting tire deals on Tirerack, but they involve tires that are marked "closeout". If you put them in your shopping cart, it tells you that the price is valid, and they are available until they sell out of their inventory.

What does someone do if they have these tires and need to replace one? Do most manufacturers end up making a model that is very similar, similar enough to put on as a 4th tire?

You hope all 4 wear out at the same time and you don't have to replace one. That is why they are cheaper.
