The only entry point for air into the stock air box is from the front plastic hole above the radiator right behind the grill. It is about a 2" x 4" molded hole that leads to a molded plastic hose and does a 90 deg bend down then a 90 deg bend into the air box. This air from this location is still available for the aFe, but now unrestricted air entry is available as well. Cold air, probably not. Much more air and less restrictive flow path and filter - yep.
So I'm not going to start the whole actual HP gain discussion since I really don't care. It sounds great and acceleration from start has improved. Again keep in mind that I have a CVT so anything that improves off the line acceleration is welcomed.

That's good enough for me, and I may order one for Christmas....but I do think a 1.6 liter engine can get more than enough air through a 2"x4" opening exposed to the force of air due to the car's motion.

You're correct though, just the sound can make it worthwhile.

Excellent! I'm glad to hear folks are pleased with the aFe CAI. i've got one on my wishlist! It'll be the first mod to my '06!

lol Pipercross makes the 'Pipercross Viper'

A true CAI isn't worth it on the cooper...you are talking 5hp max for adding a ton of complicated tubing.

Any thoughts on using the stock piping?

The biggest difference i ever felt with my various aftermarket MC intakes was in removing that piping. I went from the Piper-x (which uses the stock piping) to the K&N which has a much shorter, smoother piping and i felt a difference in the two. I wonder if a similar setup could be made which replaced the long jagged piping that is used?

What will be a beter air filter: The aFe or the Pipercross Viper?

for the cooper all intakes are exactly the same....they will all give you about 3-5 hp tops.

It's not like one will give you 20hp or anything. So you are talking a difference of 2hp and maybe a little throttle response.

I always tell people to make the decision themselves based on looks, price, sound, and legality (CARB in cali)

I just installed the kit yesterday, better gas mileage (from 26-30MPG according to the onboard computer) and much better sound, nice growl but not to loud.

As this is my first mod I would have to say that it was well worth it to get the full kit with the extra filter and recharge kit. They threw in some extra bling like a detail kit and ball cap.

The customer service is great and free shipping make it a bargin for under 200 bucks.

I ordered mine on 3/8/07, got an email on 3/13 saying that my e-check from PayPal had cleared, got another email on 3/14 saying that they were out of stock on the item and would ship next week, and that I would get another email with a UPS tracking number. Well, I've yet to receive the item or the email with a tracking number. Can't say that I'm very happy with the service so far.

I've had mine for over a year, and love everytime I step on it and hear the thoaty sound. When I first purchased it, I wasn't sure if I made a mistake. It was a toss up between the aFe and the Promini CAI. I called a tech at Promini and asked him which one he would prefer. He told me the aFe because it was sturdier. Glad I bought it!

Could you put a detailed How to Install up on your web page or post it here?
Some people have trouble removing the stock air box.
