OEM Lamp Switches Work With Aftermarket Lamp?

Hi,

I was wondering if the stock OEM center switches that have the Rear Fog Lamp. Will the Rear Fog Lamp switch work with an aftermarket front grill hood lamp lights instead of using the aftermarket lamp switch?

Will it work?

What is the purpose of the rear fog lamp? What year model 1st gen Mini came with the rear fog lamp switch? My 2002 MC did not come with it.

Also, will an aftermarket Front lower Fog Lamps work with the OEM wiring and switch?

Let me know thanks.

From what I've read on these forums, the answer is no. The console switches are momentary switches that tell the computer to turn on the selected lamp. Everything goes through the cars computers. and any additions would require that the computer be told to add any new component.

It would be easier to to wire an independent switch for any additional lights you may want.

There is a factory kit available, to add driving lights, but it is expensive and requires the dealer to enable it.

I really don't know the purpose of the rear fog light. I have a Volvo with rear fogs, I've never used them.

Thanks, I didnt know that about the console switches were momentary.

I google online and it says that the rear Fog Lamps are use for weather snow or foggy and rain conditions, but not sure if that is the case.

Does anyone know about the lower front fog lamp can use after market fog lights and will it hook up with the OEM wirning and center switch?

The rear fog lamp is pretty bright and should only be used in adverse weather conditions so as not to annoy other drivers. I'm not sure of the wattage of the front factory fogs (probably 55w) but you should be ok in replacing them with other 55w lights. OEM switching should work fine.

There is a factory kit available, to add driving lights, but it is expensive and requires the dealer to enable it.

I've installed half dozen of the factory driving light kits for GEN1 and no re-programming is required as this set of lights does not go through the General Control Module as does the circutry for the fogs. If adding driving lights a generic wiring set is MUCH easier to install then the factory one - because the factory set has a bit of complication to stay active oce enabled on a drive, but shut off as soon as the ignition goes off (if that makes sense - it is an overly complicated system IMO)

In the original 2002 models the rear fog was not offered at all in the US, it was a requirement in some other markets but not offered in the US until many US buyers insisted the empty spot in the toggle bank was causing them to loose sleep. It took awhile before it came in . . .
