hi,
I finally got the news from the dealer and my baby's delivery is due next week...
I was thinking of installing the dealer performance mod; here's what i get for 1040$ CAD:
-BMW performance exhaust
-K$N air Intake
and it is supposed to give me an additional 15 to 20 HP

has anybody done this modification already?
If u have any info i appreciate if u lemmie know.I'm gonna go at the dealer on wednesday to give an modified MC a test drive to see how it is..

thanx

happy motoring

uhhhmm, I wouldn't expect more than a few HP, certainly NOT 15-20HP from intake and cat-back on an MC! I'm guessing you're talking about the MINI "sport exhaust"? Feedback, of course, after your test-drive, please

also, moving to Perf Mods

I agree with Ryan. 15 to 20 hp is high. I have an MC with a rogue catback and a pipercross intake and get nice sound and my engine breathes better from 4k to redline. I have tested my car on a pocket dyno and get from 6 to 8 hp gain over baseline.

$1040 is a lot for a catback and an intake.

If those numbers were true I think they would be embarassed to charge about 6 grand total for the extra 37 hp the JCW provides . Actually they should anyway .

Dont expect 15-20HP but you will get some noticable gains...for a cooper I'd focus on suspension mods more.

And $1040 does seem like a lot. I got a moss intake for $120 and magnaflow cat back for $450

I concur with the other guys on Hp expectations, save your money, hang around awhile, get some education/ideas then Mod to suit your needs. Whats that in US dollars.

Welcome naira_ca,

When I picked up my MINI the dealer did that installation, but with different vendor parts. Having the dealer do it gave me a sense of security as far as warranty issues, if any problems should arise. I like it a lot. The quality is great. I have no complaints. All the different models have different sounds, some being louder than others. Mine is not loud at all at low RPMs, and is not that noticeable until over 3,000 to 4,000 RPM. Most of my driving is under 3,000 RPM. Going 70 mph is only 3,000 RPM. Good luck whatever you decide.

I too have a non s cooper. My question to you is if you are looking for the HP gains and are willing to spend that much money for it, why not just get the s???

hi,
to respond to teampajn, I'd have to say that driving standard tranny gets rewally tedious when u live in a city like vancouver which has alotta uphills and downhills...i want performance but i like comfort more....so with the cooper i have the fun driving with sport mode and comfort of normal automatic tranny
umm 1040 CAD is about 800 us$

If it is like u guyz responded ( 6, 7 additiona HP) it's not worth it... but i'm gonna ask the guy to give me dyno results for his claim

i guess i just have to wait and see

cheers

Hey naira_ca,

You may want to also consider adding the ECU engine management chip as that will add the most hp and torque. There are more than just a few on the market now and people say the Webb Motorsports one is a really good one. You may get 10 hp or so out of that -- I don't know exactly how much, but it will be more than the CAI and cat back exhaust. But you will want to use premium gas for sure with the new ECU as one way it improves performance is to base it's programming on the higher octane gas, whereas the stock ECU if I recall will let you use a lower octane gas, although MINI recommends premium.

You may want to phone Randy Webb of Webb Motorsports as he likes to help people and will give you the best advice, as all here have the utmost respect for him. Even if you don't buy from him he will give you good advice.

One thing about modding your MINI is that performance mods are generally cumulative. What that means is that some mods may state you can get 10 more hp, for example, but let's say you actually get 3. But when you add some other mod that says you can get 5 hp, you may actually get that 5 hp and not less than 5. So, if you are planning on doing more mods down the road, then the CAI, exhaust and ECU are good to have. The three together are a good combo. I don't yet have the ECU but will down the road.

Have fun thinking about all this, and by the way, modding your MINI is addictive. I read about a study the other day where the results were that cars provide an emotional response just like chocolate, sex, and cocaine. So enjoy!

800 US is more like it. You won't get great hp gains, but you will notice a great improvement over stock. With the stock setup my car would begin to bog a about 6k rpm. With intake and exhaust it breathes smooth right up to redline.

My suggestion would be intake and exhaust, but check out some other combos. Then go for suspension mods.

ANdy

I must have missed something....how long has Randy, or anyone else for that matter, had a chip for MCs? I knew GIAC was planning to work one when they finished their MCS chip, but haven't heard of anyone finishing one yet.

I think MINI Madness was advertising a chip for the Cooper, and in the UK there is availability of product as well. Personally, I'll wait for GIAC and the rep they have with the P-car guys, VW & Audi crowd.

Diamond racing used to have an MC chip upgrade on their site, but it (their site) is down right now.

I'll second that - it's been my plan too ever since Eric (at Helix) started teasing it on his site. I figure jazmini was thinking of MCS chips.
