How does our knock sensor work?
How does our knock sensor work?
It seems to be a solid donut-shaped piece bolted solidly to the front of the engine block, but how does that work? how can that arrangement sense a ping or knock? -Jeffy.
It senses the vibration in the engine block from the knocking/pinging. I haven't tried this yet with the MINI, but on many cars with knock sensors, you can activate it by rapping on the engine block with a screwdriver - you can actually hear the idle change as the knock sensor adjusts the timing in response to the "knocking" noise from the screwdriver.

Really? And once again, I learn something on NAM. Thanks for the continued education
