A couple (a few?) of my Mini's had the double-leading shoe drums (with 1-1/2" shoes vs. the 1-1/4" on the single leading shoe) and with good drums (like MiniFins) they would out-perform Cooper discs - not 'S' discs, but smaller Cooper discs ...

... short of getting a Cooper 'S' basket case parts car and swaping out the front suspension, there are a few types of conversion kits ... like the one shown here :

Just for the record this is Hotelcalif on QBs login.

You would have to go with Cooper S disc. I agree with above post. Good twin leading are better than stock 7.5 disc. You could go to 12" wheels and use the 8.4 disc which are much better. The 7.5s are very pricey also.

Mini Disc Brakes

If you're comtemplating buying Cooper S 7.5" disc brakes, you might want to do some comparison shopping. I bought my complete kit from Mini Spares in England instead of Mini Mania in the USA. The differance in cost was more than enough to cover the expence of shipping and still saved a couple of hundred bucks. Don't forget to order the backing plates and the brake hoses for the disc brakes as they are not part of the kit. As the others suggested you might want to go with the 8.4" disc brakes which are cheaper and readily available but then you have the added expense of getting 12" wheels and tires.
