Help!!!! Need help Decoding VIN

I looked at a Rover Mini today. I ran a VIN Decoder and it showed as a 2002 Mayfair??? Looking at other decoders, it looks to be a 1984. The owner thought it was a 1979. I’m so confused, any help would be appreciated.

If it were a 2002 year it would be one of the newer body style BMW MINIs, not a classic.

SAXX tells me it's an 80's car....1980-1985, L is a 998 engine, 2S means saloon, 1 means round nose as compared to the square Clubman front end,

That's about all I can tell you, but it probably is an 84 based on the serial number

I've not seen a classic vid decode that identified year

can't be a 79 as it has a 'ROVER' tag .... in 79 they were still 'Austin Morris Group'

mine IS a 79 shell per the boot latch stamp

maybe a place to start? Boot latch, wiper motor both stamped with week / year of production . . . there are other places but these are EASY to locate ... and less likely to have been changed.

Just came across this. If you haven't got your answer yet:

The SAXX is basically designating it as a MG Rover make

The 'L' = 998cc engine

2S = 2 door saloon/sedan

1 = round nose body style

0 = City E Class

2 = 1984 and onward model year

1 = LHD

The remainder is the build number position

The paint code listed isn't one specific colour. It's a combo of two. It basically means that it was painted British Racing Green with a white roof.

It's definitely not a 2002 model year.
