by 'teeth' do you mean you can see the scale down on the "balancer" as in figure 13.5c of Haynes?

If so, have you tried hooking up a timing light to see what you can see? I too found the mark hard to find until I hooked up a light the first time out and then it jumper up at me. Once located a little white paint helps mark the spot.

I did use a timing light .
Also used a stiff brush with cleaner to scrub the entire harmonic balancer.
Even with a thorough cleaning job I wasn't able to locate a timing mark.

here is how you time a Mini engine.....first remove rocker cover thats 2 bolts at top of engine once removed remove all 4 spark plugs pop car in 4th gear now pull car forward until the NO:2 Valve is just closing and both rockers on NO: 1 cylinder rocking and NO:7 Valve is just Opening, now remove Distributor Cap and see if Dizzy Rotor arm is pointing between NO;1-2 spark plugs if so then pop a dot of paint opp rotor arm on block if not then remove Distributor carefully so as not to loose drive shaft into box, check position of Driveshaft is in correct Position....see dia

I drive shaft not correct use a 3"long bolt and screw this into the end of drive shaft turn clockwise to remove and reinsert in correct position ( DO NOT USE LONG NOSED PLIERS) or it will fall down into gearbox which means engine strip down, once drive shaft is in correct position refit distributor and pop a dot of white paint on block opp rotor arm brass end is this should be pointing between NO: 1-2 spark plugs, now replace dizzy cap and check if NO:1 lead is opp white dot if not turn dizzy till it is tighten dizzy clamp and refit plugs and rocker cover ( new gasket required) take out of gear (neutral) and start engine

do you have the Haynes? Do you know what you are looking for? It is nothing more than a very small notch in the lip of the inner flange ....

I say this assuming you see the scale on an A+ block ... because if the motor is not original to the car, it might be an A series and then the timing marks are on the flywheel ....

I too had a hard time noticing that lil notch in the beginning. Then a wize LBC mechanic showed me ....

But like I said, this assumes you have a later engine ..... do we need to back up and verify you have an A+ block?????

(p.s. I KNOW I have a later engine ... it IS an A+ with the Lucas 59D distrib' ... )

Classic Mini Timing

If you find you do have the A+ block there are a couple of good articles on timing here:

25 article links come up

and not one is about ignition timing .....

valve timing ....

Mini "time line"

one article about improving gas mileage mentions incorrect ignition timing as a cause for poor mpg ....
