timing chain question

I have a 78 Austin Mini with a 998

The timing chain needed replacing so I decided to replace it with a duplex set...I have done timing chain replacements before on other cars...I lined the dots up on the crank and cam gear before I took it apart...Everything went smooth with the install..I lined the dots up perfectly on the new chain kit...But when I checked the cam timing I noticed that when the #1 cylinder is at TDC on the compression stroke the dot on the cam gear is at the opposite side of the gear away from the crank...The camshaft dot is on the other side of the sprocket....The dots line up again when the piston comes back up to the top on the next revolution, which is TDC on the exaust stroke...is it supposed to be lined up at TDC on the Exaust Stroke? I thought they lined up at TDC of the compression stroke

I checked the compression on all the cylinders after the install and they were all at 140psi so the valve events seem to be in order...

Thanks for any help

Hi..did you use a haynes book to do dot to dot.......

hope this helps....did you countersink the two bottom holes behind the small gear cog as this will foul the dupex chain when fully tightened......also the firing stroke is when NO:s 1 and 2 rockers are rocking at piston NO: 1 (rad end).....
