Ok I have a Mini 1000, so i am not expecting a rocket, but my question is. It seems like the engine is really working hard to go 65 70 miles an hour. Should a 998cc be able to do that speed with no problem? I am thinking maybe my timing is off or the carb needs adjusting (I did just move from ND to UT) The motor is in good shape and runs well at lower speeds but seems like it is really working to go 70. It runs best with a little bit of choke. Please any suggestions would be appreciated.
How hard your motor works depends on your final drive ratio.
If you have a standard 3.44:1 differential then you only get around 16.4mph/1,000rpm, going with a 3.1:1 gets you up to 18.+mph/1,000rpm, and a 2.96:1 gets 19.+mph/1,000rpm.
So, with a 3.44 going 65mph you are doing 4,000RPM! To do 70mph you need to turn 4,260+RPM. Yes, that is a lot.
I find my 1098 "likes" it between 3,700-4,000RPM. More than that and you can hear the difference on the motor.
