How to ID a car from VIN#, engine stamps..etc.

Somewhere while surfing online, I came across a web page that had an interactive search feature that ID cars and engines based on a series of choices. From there, you could click through the choices to determine the details of your search. I only saw the page once...and when there, I had no idea what i was looking for. But now I would like to find it again....or a similiar resource that will help me ID a specific engine, car, and transmission based on vins casting numbers..or stamps.

Any help??

Or...post up what'cha got and we can have a swing at it. I'm no expert, but I have seen a few, and I've got some books to help me decode things.

if the car has been reshelled....those numbers don't mean much.

Thanks for the help....I haven't found my classic yet. I think my ideal car will have a 1275 twin carb motor, fronts disks, LHD, and solid as a rock. It needs to be somewhat practical to pick it up with a trailer...say no more than 6-8 hours away. I would just hate to drive across the country expecting to pick up a "solid" car and find that me and the seller had different ideas of what "solid" meant.

I'm watching the lists everyday...waiting for "the one" to show up. Some sellers don't know what engine is in the car...and the re-vin practice caught me off guard...so hopefully, this will guide me to my Classic.
