I don't know how it works in the US, but down here you can buy 'round the world' tickets. You can opt for say, 5 stops, not including your starting city (ie. major cities all around the world)....the tickets can run from between AUD$2000-3000 for up to 7 (or so) stops.....
They are also flexible in time. You can use a ticket like that over a year (or whatever the agreed time would be). They are usually flexible for booking changes as well.
I know quite a few people who have done the seemingly mandatory Aussie pilgrimage to the UK and Europe. If you ever go to London, you'll be amazed at how many Aussies, Kiwis and South Africans there are working there.
Another Aussie travelling phenomenon is the 'ski lift attendant'. If you go to any snowfield in Canada, I guarantee you'll find at least one Aussie working there....There aren't as many in the US - but there are lots....
We are renowned travellers!
I think Agro was saying that at the moment, Qantas is offering USD$990 return trips from LA to Sydney at the moment. That's a bargain!

It's a huge industry. We have one of the biggest Gay and Lesbian Madigras in the world in Sydney every year in March!

Sydney, especially, is very gay friendly....Some parts, like Oxford street in the CBD are renowned 'gay' places...
The Prime-Minister aside, Australia likes to think of itself as quite a progressive country..

haha....they have a HUUUGGEEEE parade, and it's just a giant three week party.
It's actually good to go if you're straight too.....believe it or not, it attracts lots of straight guys and girls. Because there's lots of parties on, and shows etc on, All of Sydney CBD seems to go crazy...
It's quite cool if you're not uncomfortable with the whole premise of the occasion...

That's great value!!!!! Considering how expensive it is to fly in country.
If you want to see local flight prices, go to www.qantas.com.au and check out the 'red e-deals'. You can also check out www.virginblue.com.au and www.jetstar.com.au (owned by Qantas).
