Car Buying Advice

I have not owned a Mini for several years but looking to make another purchase. I am recently retired and I spend six months in NJ and six in Florida. I'm not looking to lease a new Mini, would prefer a later S model, two door with a six speed trans. Any advice if one year is better than another or to buy a certified car from a Mini dealer? Moonroof and Nav would be nice options to have.
I appreciate any advice.

Although I've always liked the Mini, I've never had one. Not even a ride in one (yet). Now I'm beginning the adventure to find the right one, kind of like you I would assume. This is a great place to start your research. Click on Forums (up on top left), look at the 1st, 2nd and 3rd gen mini's, then the sub forum's there, especially "Stock Problems / Issues". Some good info there on what each generation can bite you with. From there keep rolling through some of the stickies in other forums. I'm motoring on through this site and finding all kinds of good stuff and the folks here seem to be quite helpful. It's a great place!

Advice on buying a car in another country (and in general)

So I'm living in the Caribbean and my MINI is tucked away in the US, but I'm looking at buying a car here which is a little daunting.

I'm looking at a couple of cars (mazda demio and suzuki swift) and I found one that I can afford but I'm pretty sure it's been in some sort of collision. The back is recently painted and the front bumper is being held together with a dry wall screw and some adhesive putty. The alignment was off and there was a clunking noise coming from the suspension. It also felt like it had a lot of body roll or kind of like the sway bar wasn't connected.

I talked to the seller and he's going to repair the mechanical issues and let me take it for spin again. I think my main question is would you buy a car that's been in a collision? and if this car can be repaired so that it drives right, would you buy it?

Any other advice on buying a car in another country? it's a little intimidating seeing as I don't recognize most of the models. Our cars are mostly imported from japan if that makes any difference.
