If you watch again, the reverse lights come on right after the first impact. He likely hit the shift lever with his knee, hand or, arm, while trying to catch his big gulp from the cup holder.

We're still 6 weeks out... but IF US 129 AND I-40 are still closed at that point (unlikely I think, but possible), best route from the west is probably either 441 through the Smokies to Cherokee, or the Cherohala Skyway to Robbinsville.

 

... or you can take I-81 north to I-26 east to Asheville - then I-40 west to the Great Smoky Mountains Expressway and NC-28 to Fontana.

 

Here's the latest update on the I-40 repairs. They're still saying "late April"... so keep your fingers crossed.
