Anyone know what the condition of the road surface of I 40 from I81 to Knoxville currently? Last year a kind soul warned me away from using it, said there was a lot of loose stone and I'd get the heck chipped out of my car. I think there was construction at the time?

I was just down to the Dragon last week, but went by way of Pidgeon Forge and the Foothills parkway last week as we stayed there for a couple days en route.

I drove it not too long ago. It's not bad at all. No loose gravel but be sure to leave an extra car length just to be sure you don't get any old construction gravel tossed up.

Thanks! I came back that way, 129 to Foothills parkway to pidgeon forge just last week.

 

There is a bit of construction around downtown Knoxville right now, but I can't honestly remember how much gravel is on the road. If you can avoid the rush hours you will be much happier, but that's true for most roads...
