If you go to www.tailofthedragon.com, you will see that there are large auto enthusiast groups meeting at the Dragon all year long... this is probably the best weekend to stake our claim to... I'd bet that the first weekend in May will always be MOTD from now on.

Suck it up! Buy a sweater and get motoring!

Actually it’s the first full weekend in May every year and it is the best time to be going. The area is just coming to life after winter. Tapoco Lodge opens only a week or two before we get there, though I’ve been told they may be open year round now.

You don’t have as many tourists and bikers as you will in the summer and fall and the police have always been very nice in the spring and very low key.

Here is the weather.com forecast for Fontana Dam, NC...

Be sure to bring rain gear. Weather.com generally gets their extended forecast wrong here in Dallas, so you might want to bring sunscreen as well!

Well with 350+ MINIs around, it won't take long to dry the track...

When I was up there last week, it was dry and sunny at the Crossroads of Time and had been raining off and on at the Tennessee end. So I'm coming prepared for all contingincies!

I represent that remark...

In reality, don't believe (seriously) anything more than five days ahead - and there is no good reason that you can't be right up to 72 hours (3 days).

[rant]
If you can't forecast three days, there is a sinister reason behind it, or you can't really forecast. (And simply broadcasting a chart or a set of models isn't forecasting, it's broadcasting....)
[/rant]

That being said, I'll post a "real" forecast on Monday night from work, even though I can't go this year do to work "conning" me out of the trip. (Better have fun in my spot Obe!)

No offense intended, WxSquid!

My 10 day forecast is always 40% chance of precipitation. If it doesn't rain, well I told you it probably wouldn't, and if it does, I said there was a good chance it might!

I sure do hope we have good weather. A few storms are ok with me as long as we are not socked in. . .

No offense taken, but keep in mind that the "big" weather sites (weather.com, accuweather, intellicast) don't look in the weeds.

Use your local NWS office (www.weather.gov, then click on the rough location that you want - it will take you to the office that serves that area, then click on that's office's map for a local forecast that will do better than anything else you'll find for free ...)

Right now, I took a look at the models, read the reports, analyzed the the sat pictures... (yep, everything I've done for 17+ years in the Navy) and it looks like a chance of rain on Thurs/Sat/Sun. Showers, with a chance of afternoon thunder on the western side of the "hills". Yep, inital look at the 7 day point is just that - I'll update this thread daily with a tailored forecast.

How's that sound?

I have a hard time trusting weather.com in Dallas any more than 3 days out and I'm sure that the local forecasts are better, but weather.com does a fair job a few days away

I'm looking forward to the daily from someone who knows this area... Thanks Squid!

I hate to give up hope.. but its not looking promising. On the upside, if its already wet and rainy, I won't feel obligated to wash Grimace every single day.

It still looks like the forecast is for intermittent showers only . The roads dry up pretty quickly in most areas and you can just take it a little easy when wet.

As long as it is not raining constantly, we'll be fine and we'll have fun no matter what happens!
