How about parking lot door ding scratches and paint chips? What can we do with those? Touch up and buff out? I may be able to get some touchup paint from the dealer.

Jonathan- Do you know if Ralph Schomp will be bringing touch up paint to sell? They should bring ALL colors. Everyone needs some.

Also- Do you know if anyone (Schomp, Detailer's Paradise) has scheduled a dent guy? I have a few that need to be pulled/tapped out.

 

I would be happy to show how to do touchup repair using the PC, some Prima Cut, and some sandpaper--but the touchup should be applied before MITM so it's had some time to set. There's really nothing mysterious about applying touchup--it's the blending part that takes some skill. Just make sure to fill in the scratch or chip so it slightly overflows from the area as opposed to being able to see the edge of the chip and just coloring it in.

Am interested in your detailing class. Country roads and 52,000 miles take a toll on the paint.

 

Class sounds great to me. I'm particularly interested in paint chip repair and fixing up the area under the rear wiper where fluid drip has messed with the paint.

One thing that everyone needs to be remember about detailing & paint polishing--it's the relative improvement that's important--not trying to get back to perfect-because often times it isn't possible to fix it 100% without resorting to major work.

I say this because I did an unsuccessful touchup repair yesterday. Unsuccessful to my eye. I knew going into it that matching silver with factory touchup wasn't going to be perfect--that there was no way I was going to match the original flakes. But I spent 4 hours anyways---filling, sanding, painting, sanding, painting, sanding, clear coat, sanding. The end result was as expected--smooth to the touch repair with paint that varied in light and darkness within the metallic flakes. Did the customer like it? Not really--but it was better than before. I still didn't charge her because I wasn't satisfied with the results.

I'll be happy to show the techniques with the tools that you have now, or can access pretty easily.

I haven't posted any times yet. Guess I should do that sometimes next week. Right now I've scheduled a few details at MITM so classes would either coincide or run around them.

 

For those attending my sessions--which are yet to be announced---start collecting those fake plastic credit cards you get in the mail (Visa in your name) (not the cardboard ones) that you probably discard right away. These make great tools for taking apart the MINI and the best part is--that if you break it, chances are a new one will be in the mail shortly!

Save them and I will show you what to do with them.

Also old hotel key cards are great tools--so fake credit cards, or hotel keycards--if you got them, bring them--you only need one for the session.

It is. I work in sports medicine and unfortunately, football starts 2-a-days on the 10th. So there's just no way.

For those that are still following my thread here, I've got a few more items to add, but now I'm thinking of making this into a little game. Sort of a detailing Scavenger Hunt. So far I've got 5 items that are either junk around the house, or stuff I found at the local dollar store that can really help me while I detail. Hmm, maybe a prize will be a kit of my version of the household tools.

I'm going to make a list of categories or detailing tasks to solve. I will have my own answers and reveal them at MITM. I'd like to do a little Show and Tell, and those that participate and can find say atleast 10 of the 15 items--or whatever the number is--will get a prize.

Anyone want to play??

Ok, I just came up with this idea. Not like I really need to mention it, but in case anyone is interested in receiving feedback about their paint care techniques--and would like suggestions on how they could do better--or just need verification of what they are doing--I'll be available for this.

Preferably I'd like to do it during a group session where I can go evaluate a bunch of cars at once. So give your paint it's best shot and look for me at my booth--you wouldn't go to the dentist with your teeth stuck with corn bits and sticky candy would you????

So don't make the evaluation about how great the car would look if it didn'thave the 1 inch layer of mud and bug guts on it.

 

I am more than interested in a class! Just got my first MINI and want to make sure I do things correctly from the beginning to keep it in top condition. We are flying in from Florida so won't have our MINI and due to a previously planned schedule won't arrive till Sat. afternoon. So if the class is Sat. afternoon or Sunday I'm in.

 

Is there an appt/schedule posted anywhere yet? I don't think I heard back from you on this.
