Hot exhaust tips - Mini branding...

After a 3.5+ hour run home to Philly from Ithaca today, I was unloading the Mini when my calf accidentally came into contact with the hot exhaust tip leaving a nice burn. No big deal for me, but it would have been had my girlfriend been the one unloading the bags.

Just figured I'd post the warning...

Oh yeah, I got two circles right across the shins on the old car!

You learn to spread your legs a bit when grabbing stuff out of the back.

Some people pay for brands. Why don't you get a mini tattoo in the middle of it?

HA Ha, I did the same thing yesterday while unloading my mountainbike out of the back. Barely touched it and YIKED away quick enough to leave only a small mark. I know the centermounted exhaust tip on my Cayman actually expands from the heat and sticks out further, I'd be willing to bet the R56 does the same. Gotta be more careful!

Your wish is my command . This happened the second day that I got my MINI and it has now been almost a month. It almost happened again today as well. I guess I need some leg guards for whenever I pop my boot now.

one common denominator for you all...
you all have S's!
all you need to do is move the tail pipes to the side : )

A burn on the shin is serious

I too was burned by the tailpipe of my '07 MCS.
I've heard people on these forums comment that we should be more careful... that perhaps BMW should put stickers on the bumper... duh- tailpipes are hot... that we shouldn't complain - let the buyer beware.

well, all of these are valid - but the bottom line is that tailpipes can get EXTREMELY hot and a third-degree burn (like mine) can be very dangerous.
Why? the front aspect of the lower leg (shin) is covered with skin and very little fat. blood supply is limited and healing can be impaired. cellulitis can set in which can spread upwards ... you can imagine the rest... infection, surgery...

Bottom line:
Of course, by careful.
This is a design flaw and should be fixed by BMW.
If you get burned and it isn't superficial, stay off of it, elevate it, and get it checked out.
You might need antibiotics.. you might need a skin graft (if it's deep and wide).

I think BMW has attempted a subtle fix...the Clubman exhaust is a perfect example.

Can you just imagine the number of burn cases if a Clubman S had the traditional "S" exhaust configuration + the Clubby barn doors?!

I suffered significant burns to my right wrist when I had the accident on 03/15/08. Friction burn + chemical burn = LOTS of pain & scarring.

I own a Cooper (non-S) and a month or so ago several of us got together at a local hangout to casually show our MINIs alongside Mustangs, 'Vettes, etc. etc. Jeff (Warped1966) had a loaner and I leaned against the boot, not realizing it was an "S" and I burned my right calf. It hurt a great deal and I had tears in my eyes. Within an hour the skin had tightened up to the point that I couldn't walk normally and was pretty much walking as if I was wearing a 4" stiletto pump on my right foot!

There's a faint scar on my calf now...hopefully it won't turn white in the sun...which is what happens to the scar on my wrist!

here's a photo

I've attached a picture of my burn after a few days.
Another key note:
after a burn, put sunscreen on it for 6 months if you want to avoid permanent discoloration.

That's awful!
I'm pretty sure there was no need to circle it though, that did make me laugh!
