Had our Light Coffee 2015 Countryman S All4 since 2018 (low mileage car). It just turned 40k miles. The other day after putting it in the garage I noticed a noise not heard before. It was a fall day, not at all hot. The fan was running (on high it sounded like). Never done this before even in the summer with a/c on! It finally shuts off but it takes several minutes. I did some research and noticed a discussion on the fan running after shutoff, and it could potentially be a bad temperature sensor, common to the N14 & N18 turbo engines....correct? Taking it to my longtime BMW Independent mechanic next week, since the check engine light finally appeared after it doing this for a few days! Anyone experience this?...and what was the fix?

TIA,

John

I have the exact same issue with the fan run on 2016 Countryman S at 32000 miles or at least I noticed it then. Still does it from time to time a year later. Our thermostats are very high temp states opening at 221 F. Low speed fan comes on at 221F and High at 234F. I ran some test on the fans, low and high and found that the low sound is very similar to the high. ( I had the R53 fan resistor issue so I had some work experience with that and that low fan is very quiet compared to high in the first gen minis). Also tested when at temp the I heard the low fan come on and everything was in line per specs. So I left it alone , no Check engine lights or codes even with a BMW MINI specific code reader. Please let us know your finding.

Probably not your issue, but:
I used to be friends with the local red squirrels until a few months ago when I finally got tired of seeing them be territorial with each other around my tires. Upon looking under the hood, I found a crap ton of tree leaves (this was early Fall) all over the engine and throughout the engine bay. The jerks even ate a couple holes into the hood liner, which were also stuffed with leaves. Same with the door columns. I filled a 14-gallon shop vac cleaning all of it out. I'm lucky to have found it because that could have been bad. And it wasn't as if the car was sitting unused for days--it's practically a daily driver.

Anyhow, ;tldr even though it's a long shot, may want to check for friendly vermin nest messing with the airflow.

Well, I was right from reading issues on this forum. Our 2015 CMS All4 had a bad temp sensor and thermostat. My BMW mechanic installed a new thermostat & sensor, and performed a coolant flush and all is well! A lot of labor involved of course because working on a MINI engine is very laborious!$$$.

Thanks to those on this forum who had similar issues on the N14 & N18 engines!
