Dreaded Engine Malfunction - Low Power Mode

Finally hit me the other day at 79k miles on an on-ramp, felt like it ran out of gas and sputtered out making all sorts of ding dong noises and flashing engine pictures. Said OK to still keep driving at max speed of 50mph. Pulled off to the side of the freeway and shut it down and waited for a few minutes. Restarted, and interestingly it had cleared, but I was certain that there was still a problem lurking. Made it to work using no more than half throttle. Searched the forums and seems that people have said its either a/the plugs/coils or high pressure fuel pump. Knowing I am not on the list of the extended warranty for the HPFP, I went with the new plugs and coils first. While waiting for them to arrive, I told my wife to baby it, but she had to floor it on another on-ramp and it did it again, really freaked her out. Carly was showing misfires I believe in Cylinders 3 and 4. Reset it and drove it gently home, new stuff arrived, and replaced the plugs and coils (Bosch Plugs, OE Coils) and took it out on a flog run (like rental car level flogging). Problem must have been in one of the 2 since its actually running smoother than before this event, no issues all the way to redline. Another MINI trip to the dealer averter, phew.

Assuming the only codes were for misfires, likely just coils and plugs. If you get any kind of fuel pressure codes, I would check the fuel filter. The 2013+ N18 engines don't have issues with the fuel pump like the older N18 and N14 engines.

My 2012 countryman, 60k miles, just got this light popup...I replaced coils and plugs about 5k miles ago, just routine maintenance. Any guesses where I should start?

So mine ran for a while with the new plugs and coils then went back to low power mode. I kept resetting it and it kept coming back more often and it ended up being the timing chain. But the codes that were coming up were something like exhaust cam out of range or something like that so the code was related to timing. Back in the top post, the code was misfiring and a new coil cleared that right up.

I had a Bosch coil go bad in less than 50k miles. So don't rule them out. If you get a particular cylinder misfire code, methodically move coils and plugs to other cylinders to see if the misfire code follows a particular coil and/or plug.
