R60 TPMS External Interference
TPMS External Interference
Anyone have 'TPMS External Interference' warning message? I get it somewhat randomly, I looked on the BMW forums and some people said the receiver on the rear bumper is usually the culprit especially with corrosion inside and on the pins since its on the bottom of the vehicle especially in northern climates. Also wondering how long the TPMS batteries are good for. Will you get a TPMS battery low message? I do need to get new tires soon so it would be the right time to do it. I have a 2016 but I didn't own it until 2019 and the selling dealer had just put new tires on it then but no idea if they did any tpms maintenance at that time. The little receiver module in the back is pretty pricey for what it is before I go and replace it.
The first time I ever saw it was after I put in the Andream module which I like and its working great so I am totally hoping that is a total coincidence.... just to get to the Andream module means taking the whole dash apart again.
Thanks

So I bought the replacement RDC module to fix the 'TPM Malfunction' and 'TPM External Interference' however, as soon as you plug in the new module you get an immediate error of TPM Malfunction, putting in the flaky module immediately goes to TPM active. Looking through the BMW forums it appears that the RDC module needs to be coded/reset through one of the tools. I'm going to wade through NCS Expert to send the SG-Reset to the module which should then start working.
Leave it to BMW to make this car have to go to the dealer for everything including replacing a module.... I'm going to always give it a go before I resort to that.

OK, Great news, was able to reset the module through NCS Expert and TPMS is back online!
You can get the BMW coding tools through bimmergeeks.net, you will also need the USB to OBD K+DCAN cable.

Our R60 Countryman is inside of the R56 module in NCS Expert.
Lots of the information at this point is old, also the terminology is 'Coding' vs 'Programming' which some people on the forums use interchangeably but my understanding is Coding essentially turns options on and off that are already existing where 'Programming' updates the firmware in different modules in the car. To program I believe you use the INSTA software package and also you want to have your car on essentially a DC Power Supply (The forums suggest 70A) so that you have steady bus power and it doesn't dip while programming which could brick a module.
This doc was great on how to reset a module on the car if its been replaced and has to be 'matched' to the vehicle like the RDC module:

For anyone not familiar with Coding on our MINI's, there are a bunch of little tweaks that you can do to the car such as, changing the way the locking works (I have mine set to unlock when you turn the car off), the lighting, change the speedometer to be actual instead of reading high by a few mph, one-touch sunroof open/close, all sorts of stuff. I will note that the easiest way to code common things is actually with Carly but it has only a subset of things you can do in NCS expert.
