R60 Hi guys, navi question.
Use your phone or buy one of the standalone navigation systems. You can get a mounting bracket for them. MINI will also sell you one at an outrageous price. Even if you could update your system, the older MINI navigation system was pretty poor - the display especially because the screen was not high enough resolution. My 2013 Paceman had navigation, and it didn't even label main roads on the display. The navigation function worked pretty well, but the maps were old and the screen terrible.

Yes it can be added. Look "nav retrofit, hopefully a how to guide" on here and it'll help you. I just added oem nav and mini connected to my 2011 mcs, which only had stock hi-fi Harmon kardon system.

I, personally, refuse to pay for an update.
Like you said though, just use your phone. The Waze app is the best so far!
Use your phone or standalone GPS unit and save yourself the hundreds to thousands of dollars it would take to retrofit the MINI nav which has been obsolete for 4+ years. Alternatively, you can find some Chinese companies that make an aftermarket unit that will support CarPlay and/or Android Auto, though you or a trusted technician would have to install it.
When I did the retrofit I have less than $800 invested that was with all the miscellaneous Parts wires and connectors. Yeah the navigation portion isn't the best but it does work the Simplicity of having the navigation built into the car to some is just fine. The main reason I went and did the retrofit was because ultimately I think the look of the dash is way better and plus I am able to stream Bluetooth audio from my phone now. That on top of just the overall look was enough for me to just spend the money on it. Also was a fun little project putting everything together. Also I only had to splice into two wires on the factory radio harness so ultimately I could go back to the complete Factory setup and no one would ever know unless they saw those two wires that were cut.
