I've just accepted the fact that this cars gas mileage is not as good as advertised...

I have made 3 different trips from Denver to Vegas in warm and cold weather and driving very gentle and only going 3-4 miles over the limit... I tried it with A/C off and on Ski racks and bars both off and on, loaded down with luggage and cargo and also just one suitcase and I always averaged about 25mpg at best.

I have done the drive from Denver to Arkansas about 7 times - same circumstances... packed car, empty car, rack/no rack, all weather conditions, etc... and the best I ever managed was 24 mpg. Once I only got 21. Not impressed.

My Z4 with a V6 got about 28 or so and my 09 MINI hatch S showed as high as 39 on the same road trips... Still, I guess thats the trade-off with a heavier car with All Wheel Drive and 4 doors.

Still, I wish they were more honest about the fuel economy of this car... Had I known that it would be this poor, I would've gone for just the MINI 2 Door Hatch S and been happy with only FWD but significantly better fuel economy.

My guess is that the people who get 30 mpg don't have the All4 and/or they also drive on highways with speed limits ranging from 55-65 with no crosswinds or traffic. When I drive across Kansas it's 75mph on I-70 and I usually set my cruise on 79 or 80. I'm sure if I was driving on slower highways the MPG would go up. I'm also sure that if the Kansas crosswinds weren't so redonk, that it would be higher. I wonder if I had gotten the sports suspension and it sat lower if it would've made a difference? No idea there...

Still, I don't know what else I could do to improve mpg... I put in highest octane at reputable gas stations, I drive like a grandma... Set the cruise and don't run the A/C nonstop... I have the 17 in tires and wheels and not the 18 or 19 inchers... the tires are the Pirelli's that came on them and they're marketed as being eco friendly and said to improve gas mileage. I always make sure the pressure is accurate in them. I have them aligned and rotated every 10000 miles. All service is covered and done through the MINI dealership. I take off the snowboard carrier unless I'm going riding... I don't really keep any extra stuff in the car so it's not like I'm weighing it down... I shift about 3500 rpm with no sport button off about 75% of the time... no idea what could be done to improve it.

About the only other thing I could imagine doing would be to put in a K&N air filter and hope for a small improvement. I hate to do that as all service is covered for 6 years and 100,000 miles so air filters are included in that too... but I guess it's worth shelling out 50 bucks to see if it could help.

I'm due for another service in 800 miles so I'll ask them to check it out when I take it in. I'll prolly have to lean on them to make sure they do any and all software updates and make sure they do a complete flush and fill of all fluids and change the plugs... I'm hoping that if I make a stink that it will make them really dig in and check things out...

Im one of the ones that get around the 30 mpg range, all4 manual only use chevron here on the west coast or costco. Its interesting to see the variations in mpg between regions of the us. As far as driving goes, im usually driving on the highway around 65-75 mph, with rpms ranging just around 3000, my shifting will vary( every so many hundred miles ill do an Italian tune, while normally being conservative), ill heel/toe or rev match when down shifting to not shock the engine. Also every so often ill add an additive to the gas to help it stay regular.

Car manufacturers (and i mean all of them) and honesty about fuel mileage dont go together in a sentence. Their marketing & sales people will tell you whatever they can get away with to sell their product to the public. And its not just here in North America. Check out the MINI 2 forum in the UK. Lots of owners complaining about getting far less than the advertised miles per gallon.

I got 19s on 2 months after i got the used R60. Made no/much difference with the MPG. Probably b/c majority is city drive like 80-90%.

K&N or any high flow panel filter will help a bit along with some extra power.

Direct inj. will cause carbon build up. I hv seen they build up as early as 5K and cause problem. When it gets bad it will affect power and mpg but carbon clean up is costly but is worth asking the dealer look into it during big service and or before warranty expires.

Went on road trip last week 1st tank was like 90% freeway and 10% city, it was full downpour and windy and foggy and i hit about 28mpg. This is after i took off the bike rack. On the way back for now about half of the tank was freeway and again with downpour and wind and fog. Still got about half tank left and back to city and highway mix and presently about 25mpg
