My car routinely takes a little more than 10 gallons when I fill it right after the low fuel alert comes on. It usually says around 60-70 miles left at that point.

My girlfriend thinks I am nuts since it has nothing to do with price and I run out of gas 3-4 times a year, she might be on to something !?!
Don't know what year your car is but it should be 13.5 gal tank.
Also, running to empty isn't a good practice because your fuel pump is more likely to pick up crap that settles to the bottom of the tank.
I do the miles range thing. Once you figure your total miles you are comfortable with, fill at that point and reset the OD.

You can then to then see how many additional gallons are placed into the tank after the last candy corn is lit until the pump clicks off.

This way, you know when the fuel gauge begins decrementing from full, you have X gallons in your tank between full and whatever candy corn you recorded when you started filling. You should be able to come up with a rough estimate of your range between the recorded fill candy corn and the full candy corn. By doing this and taking the known tank capacity, MPG into account, a rough calibration of when you need to fill up and total fuel in the system can be made.

It's probably overly complicated (my nature) and one that requires you to pay attention to the gauge. I'd think after doing this a few times, a driver could get a pretty good feel for how much range so many candy corns get and it will vary from car to car based on what I've read here.
If you try and fill up with car running you'll most likely get a CEL code.
The ECU or whatever it is that detects things will thing the gas cap is off which it IS> LOL

That's so good! My MINI says that when I first fill up my tank completely. Something around 416-426 miles to empty. However, my candy corns turn red at two ticks and that's usually around 350 miles give or take a few. I want to know why it's so far off =/

this sounds like it is a COUNTRYMAN issue more than a MCS problem. i avg 32 mpg in my MCS and get about 425 miles per tank. i have run the gauge to absolute zero on a couple of occasions and knock on wood, never ran out of gas. think i cut it real close today as the car was idling rough when i pulled up to the pump. i had a COUNTRYMAN loaner for a couple of weeks in april and it got about 27 mpg. as i recall, i ran the tank pretty low on it too without any problems.

I've been extremely **** in keeping records on this car. So I have every fill up but documented and only 2 without stats.
I don't have my document handy so I won't have exact numbers till I get home.

Interseting to be reading this. When I filled up the other day, I had 34 mi left in my tank. My average on the tank was 31.6, and after completely filling up the tank with 11 gallons and some change, It showed my range for 385 miles. It stayed in the 380's until I put about 90 mi on the tank before it started dropping. I was also getting like 32.5 MPG. I hit the 200 mi mark today, getting like 31.6MPG and still had > 1/2 tank. At about 240ish it dropped to the 1/2 mark. The fuel gauge on this thing reminds me of the fuel gauge on my SeaDoo (ie. NOT VERY ACCURATE). I've ran my MTE down to 40miles to empty with 1 candy corn and been at the 360mi mark on my last tank. I've never chanced a totally empty candy corn bank.

FWIW - when the FULL candy corn is lit up, I've easily put another gallon and a half into the tank. with your foot off the brake, push/hold the start button to basically do what is Accessory mode, to get radio, fans, and gauges active.

I came close to running out of gas on the first tank in my new coupe. The book says the tank holds 13.2 gallons (US). I was running 30 MPG according to the average MPG reading from the computer. The gauge went red when I was down to the last two corns. Mileage to empty indicated 60 miles. Ok, so far so good. That is about 1 gallon per corn at the end of the range. That agrees with the book when they said the "reserve" is 2.3 gallons. As I pulled into work the next day I dropped to one corn. Miles to empty indicated 30. So far so good. Mileage to home at this point is 7. Got back from lunch which took a couple of miles and I was 27 miles to empty. Drive home should be no problem. On the way home the mileage to empty started to rapidly drop. Went straight for the normal station I go to. By this time the digital speed reading had been replaced with an icon of a gas pump. Telling me I had better find one of "these" or else I would not need the speed reading! I pulled into the station with the mileage to empty reading 9. Put in 13.28 gallons of gas. Mileage driven at that point was 380. Now I start looking for gas when I get down to two corns.

Looks like our gauge is right on the mark. Just put in 11.1 gallons with 30 miles range left, and I don't think the attendent topped the tank off all the way (customers are not allowed to pump gas in New Jersey).

I had 280 miles on this tank of gas.
My R56 (yes, not an R60) apparently ran out of gas yesterday . I had absolutely no idea as I still had 4 carrots (?, one less than half a tank) .

Anyway, Mini gets towed to the nearest dealership and this morning, I was told that it ran out of gas. They added a gallon with no change on the carrot thingi .

Should I trade it in and get a new one? (It's got less than 600 miles) .

Anyway, that was a joke but it'd be a shame if the bad sensors are trickling down to R56s as well.

Will keep ya'll posted

Just ran the tank down to one carrot and 6 miles to go. It took 11.88 gallons to fill it up.

Only one other time have I put more fuel in (11.95 gallons).
