i have about 6000mls on 2010 clubman, auto, stock, all city driving 25.5 average even in winter.

 

I'm getting around 28 overall, with a lot of spirited driving. But on my commute to work, if I just take it easy, I've gotten over 36. But it 25 miles and 99% highway

 

2,100 mile 2012 all4 MT averaging 26.8, i have some beautiful mountain roads to swerve around going into town from work. mostly using 3rd and 4th gears, occasionally 5th for the rollies. i would say my driving is quite spirited. i drive around 40 percent highway, the rest are the twisties, gotta love 55 on unmarked roads. going out to town theres a four mile downhil, steep and twisty which saves gas, but coming back up 3rd and 4th again really gets laid into. My sister has an AT R56s clubman and with 11,000 on the tac shes averaging 27 doing mostly the same roads, less enthusiastic however. being that the countryman has all that extra weight form the front diff, and the larger size for 4 doors id have thought consumption would have been far worse, especially with such low miles after break in period. im very happy with countryman!

 

my mpg has been steadily trending downwards. normally i ignore an outlier but the last four fillups have yielded 23.9, 23.8, 24.3, and 22.7 mpg. my average is now at 25.0 mpg.

I'm wondering if having the a/c on full blast all the time in the heat is compromising my mileage. I guess a cool fall will answer that question.

 

I have a 2011 manual transmission S All4 and was seeing similar mpg's, but I had mine re-flashed due to hesitation and I have seen a great improvement. Even with the high temps we've experienced lately, I am getting 33-34mpg on the highway and about 25 in town.

AC definitely plays a role, as do leaving headlights on in day, though the AC is much more draw as you are pumping the compressor.

I'm getting about ~28 with semi-agressive starts, hilly terrain and winding roads, less than 50% freeway. (3000 miles on the car - Auto S)

I got 34 on a trip with one other adult and 2 kids. (Load pays against milage as well)

 

A/C has a large negative effect on fuel mileage for low speed driving especially, as you are using the energy from your fuel to cool the interior over a relatively long period while covering a relatively short distance. Nothing much you can do about it other than to try to keep the car interior cool while parked (park in shade if possible, get windows tinted, crack open windows/sunroof, use a windshield sunscreen). In my area, finding shaded parking in summer is the an ongoing challenge!

 

I prefer windows down as much as possible--but rain and mid 90s humid weather = windows up, a/c on!

Also ... I think the front differential on the SALL4 is an open diff because I am frequently spinning the inside front on aggressive turning starts. Similarly, I am often taking turns and hearing some quiet tire scrub. I'm sure these habits are partly responsible for my mpg numbers. can't help it!

 

Has anyone ever done an comparison to the effects of drag, i.e; windows down, against the effects of AC? Just curious I wonder which one wins.

Being in South Texas, not a good time for me to test windows down right now.

 

the mythbusters did their typical low-statistical-relevance test on this and found varying results. they only tested to 45 mph for one.

I suspect that it really depends on how fast you're going and how hot it is. South Texas, DC, or wherever.

Oh and then there's the Helmholz problem with various combinations of windows down. At 75 mph, I have to have all four down and the roof slid back to avoid popping my ear drums.

 

I've had my CM for almost 18 months now and it has almost 15,000 miles on it. I get roughly 28 city/32 highway on my All4 Manual transmission CM. I've had no problems so far and love it more and more everyday! I'm somewhere in the middle when it comes to driving. I'm not aggressive but I do drive in Boston where you can't be a timid driver.

 

I've had my 2011 S All4 with a manual transmission for about 6 weeks. I get a consistent 27-28 in mixed city and highway driving. Last weekend, I took my wife on a 1000 mile road trip across Colorado. I kept the A/C on and drove a consistent 70-75 on the straights, and got 35 mpg highway.

 

I'm in breaking period and I get 8.8. L/100km, mixed city and highhway drivewith my auto SD.

 

I still reset the trip computer/odometer at every fill up and compute actual mileage vs. what the Trip MPG says.

Thus far, the trip computer has overstated it by as much as 2.5 MPG and as little as 0.7.

Actuals seem to land in the 33-34 range in mixed driving (I have a long commute mostly on country roads so low avg speed + few stops = high mpg).

 

Drove five hours straight at at least five over the speed limit on the freeway between San Diego and Las Vegas a few days ago with temperatures ranging from 85 to 111. AC was on the entire trip. 33.58 actual mpg! Not too shabby!

 

during break in(gentle driving) my all4 manual got 27.6mpg a few times/avg.
afterwards I was seeing 25.x & now I have 3000mi. I just did a 1000mi roadtrip.
I am averaging 26.5mpg.
tires at 40spi
roof rack, no attachments.
hwy speeds of 75mph, w/ stints to 100. mostly crusing around 70-8o tho.
It's lower than expected, the roof rack didnt really lower any milage that I have noticed. (if so, less than 1)
I do have an aggressive driving style but I'm not beating the **** out of it.
IIRC sticker Hwy was 32mpg. I dont think I'll ever see that or break 30. If I didnt during my granny shift, less than 65mph break in period, then I surely wont now or ever.
I was expecting a tad more. A 29/30 Hwy average would be nice.

 

Next time you go on a long trip, try an experiment. Engage cruise control on a straight and level segment, starting with your preferred cruising speed (say, 75mph [if legal]). Note the instantaneous (vice average) MPG reading on your OBC. When it's stabilized, reduce your speed by 5mph and note the reading again. Repeat for different constant speeds, looking for the cruising speed with the highest MPG. I think you'll be surprised.

I think this is a fun way to reduce boredom on long, straight, flat routes in flyover country. Slightly less boring than calibrating my speedometer via mile markers, anyhow.

 

Your car is optioned similarly to mine. Actual EPA highway rating is 31 mpg.

The EPA highway base test averages less than 50 mph and never exceeds 60 mph (check it out here: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/fe_test_schedules.shtml). The "High Speed" test touches 80 mph but is mostly in 60's and below.

You are doing well to get 26-27 mpg at the speeds you cite.

 

i think the actual mileage is 10% less than what the OBC tells you. i have to say, all city driving absolutely kills my CMs' gas mileage...putting it in the teens :(

 

I have to admit I'm alil disappointed by the overall gas mileage I'm getting. I'd been in denial but I finally admitted it to myself today.

Yesterday I drove to an amusement park about an hour away with the A/C on, 3 total adults, and I think I got good mileage out of the car about 60 miles out of each candy corn the total trip was about 120 miles. Then today I had to run errands 25 minutes all highway then another 20 minutes all highway and then 25 minutes all highway home after all was said and done I was at half a tank.

I know, not very scientific measurements but it just seems that I get 50-60 miles out of the 1st candy corn and then the rest just disappear so quickly.

It drives me crazy thinking about all the different variables that contribute to the mileage. I'm not willing to sacrifice my A/C, I hardly ever use sport mode, and I question whether or not I should have gotten a manual instead of an automatic.

My previous MINI an '05 manual convertible got a good 420 miles out the tank and I didn't expect my new car to be the same but some how I just figured that a new car must have some some kind of technological improvements that would make it similarish.

 

My overall average over the past 1200 miles, since new is 22.8..

 

I hope that it is close to as advertised! That is one of the main reasons I chose the Countryman. I pick mine up on friday.

 

I just eclipsed 1,000 miles and I'm getting about 25mpg so far. Then again, if I really cared about mpg I would've bought something else. The car is a lot of fun, which is the primary reason I bought it.

I am also a former owner of an 05 Mini, an S hardtop, manual. My 2012 manual CMSA4 is so far exceeding the overall fuel economy of the 05. Also I find it easier to get good mileage with the CM. I really had to try hard to get good mileage with the 05. This is impressive considering the increased capacity, 600 lb increased weight, and larger frontal area of the CM compared to the hardtop.

I've been babying mine and am getting 22.8... UGH! I do drive in a lot of traffic though, so that has a lot to do with it. My 135 had 300+hp and got 22.4... JEEZ!
