Beautiful car. I notice some mixed emotions in response to you. Sharing your joy with you but also concern for your driving experience level and the way MINIs want to be driven.
My son and I are driving to Las Vegas the last weekend of March to do the Driver's Edge teen driving school. It is free and provides very pertinint information and driving experience. Maybe you ought to check it out. They probably have schools in LA but the drive to Vegas is fun anyway. We'll be caravaning out from New Mexico with another MINI. The cool part is you get a driving school worth $200-300 for free.

For Driving Schools, try doing a search for local BMW clubs. You may have to do some work to find clubs that will allow drivers under the age of 18. Phil Wicks does allow 16yo I think.

Yup driving school is the way to go. When I was in high school I did a session through BMW aimed at under 18 drivers. I'm not sure if they still do it, but it was so much fun and it was free! Try and ask a dealer or contact the local BMW club.
