New member here just saying Hi and starting my research on R53 vs R56 minis. If I were to swap a Honda K20, which generation mini would be better build quality in terms of everything else. Id also be doing alot of upgrades like suspension components, brakes, exhaust, and anything else that may be worth it. I know the mushrooming strut tower issue on the R53 but I think reinforcement plates solve that. Im new to the platform so are there any other common problems with these cars beside engine and transmission issues.

Assuming hardtop versions, both are getting long in the tooth with the last R56 coming out in 2013. Nice R53s are holding their value but either way you're looking for a sound body and grenaded engine presumably so I'd be looking at 2007-2020 R56s with the dreaded N14 engine as you should be able to get a sound body for $2-3k. I think the build quality of the 2nd generation cars was slightly better although I my F56 is definitely better than my R56 but there is 13 years between them.

Sounds like an interesting idea. If you do it, run a commentary on here to show us your progress. It will be fun to follow.

cheers
