I recently acquired a tidy looking Cooper S, and as expected I'm having a few issues with it. I've done an oil & filter change, and replaced a dodgy water temp sensor during the day Friday , haven't driven it since and today when I started it, it now sounds like a bag of nails from the timing chain area, when it was fine before (with correct oil level but grubby looking oil). I preferred the car with the EML light on, fan permanently on, and it not sounding likes it's going to blow up Threads all seem to point towards a camchain tensioner, but mine idles fine and gets really noisy when I rev it around the 1.5-2k mark, I understand dodgy tensioners are usually the opposite, so I'm stumped. I will scour this forum for answers and suggestions. Stay safe all.
The timing chain tensioner comes in two different lengths. I found out the hard way when I installed the tensioner and it was making all that racket just like what you described. Luckily I saved the old one and that is how I found out they sent me the wrong one(short one).
