New to NAM
Hello Mini experts and NAM FAM!! I came across your forum doing some research on the Mini Cooper and figured what better way to gain further insight into this fun little car, than to ping a forum of owners and experts.
little about me: Recently stationed out in NV, big on family, and I have a deep passion for cars and Sports/outdoors. I’m currently in the market for a Mini Cooper S or JCW. Most likely 1st Gen; but, maybe the 2nd gen is better option?? That’s where the community comes in to help guide my decision.
Ive always wanted a Mini Cooper since I saw them release in the early 2000’s... Timing just never lined up
I hope to find a nice Cooper S or JCW (Manual) in the 05/06 years; unless, I’m convinced a 2nd Gen is the better Option. There’s not a lot of consistent guidance on what years are the best used. Most basic media outlets say get the newest model your pockets can handle. My goal is to find one for fun and tinkering, but also one I won’t sink 1000’s upon 1000’s in just to keep it “running”.
thanks again and I look forward to everyone’s comments and suggestions.

Welcome to the forum. A corollary theory to the “buy the latest model“ is to “buy the last years of a generation”. The 05/06 are the more reliable of the first generation and 12/13 are the more reliable of the second generation.
The 06 is far more reliable than the 07. Many people say the first generation is more reliable than the second. I can only go by my experience. I have had only one minor repair (under $200.00) on my low mileage 06 convertible S since the initial repairs to get it perfect three years ago.
The first generation is a more raw MINI experience where the second is refined. In my opinion: the first is a perfect second car where the second generation would make a great daily driver.
By the way, the first generation extended to 08 for the convertible. Not sure about other models but MINI is known for moving different models to the next generation over a few years.

Thank You!!
First, thank you for the kind comments. I come from generations of service in the military, so it runs in our blood. I love my country and serving her people!
Thank you As well for the advice on the Mini Coopers gens/years. I have been largely looking at 05/06. Especially an 06. There’s a seller on here with a ‘10 JCW that’s in great condition and for a great price!! But is the 10 a year riddled with issues?
I see your point about the 1st Gen having a more raw experience and the later gens a more refined experience. I would love to know if the Supercharger years are better than the turbo or vice versa? My common knowledge of the two boosters is that turbo tends to be more efficient, while super chargers have instant power due to the crank. However, I think with the small 4 cyl it’s possibly not the case with the supercharger.
anyways. Thanks again and my search continues for the right mini to have some fun in!!

And you have done your research! 2005/2006 S’s are by far one of the best driver’s MINIs! Shorter on bells and whistles of the 2011+ R56S’s, but a much more pure performance & driver’s car! Now, I’ve also seen some N18 R56S’s that are also truly awesome! Enjoy the drive!
Thank you for your service!
Stay safe! Drive fast, Take chances!

thank you to you as well!! Appreciate the supportive comments and the information that confirms my inner beliefs that an 05/06 will be great yearS to seek.
My previous Bimmers were bought used at incredible deals... I certainly can’t afford those things new. Lol. With the Mini, thankfully a good used 05/06 S won’t break the bank either. I’ve put some money aside during this whole covid mess, so I’m hoping to find one in that 5-6k range; but, would pay a little more if the car was one of those can’t miss deals.
the JCW is a nice feature. But I also know that they come with a higher price tag. Is the difference between the S and the JCW night and day? My guess is the S will still offer plenty of enjoyment and connection of the driver and the road.
