Hi everyone I'm Bob. I've had a 2002 Mini Cooper S for about 2 months. I love the car, but it kind of feels like I have an old Harley! I feel like she needs special attention, her name is Gertrude. Currently I'm trying to get the creaking sounds in the steering at low speed to go away. You can hear it when you are just sitting, with the car running, and turn the steering wheel either way. I do not think it is the strut mounts as the sound is coming from right behind the airbag/steering wheel. I already removed the panel below the steering wheel and sprayed silicone spray where I thought it could rub. Would it help if after i remove the airbag and steering wheel, I sprayed silicone spray right there around what looks to be a bearing?

Welcome.
From what your describing it sounds like it may be in the slip ring for the wiring to the airbag. These are common to make noise on the early car. No real fix if that is it beside replacing it.
