Hopeful R52 automatic (S) owner looking for advice

Obviously documented maintenance is a priority but what does a potential buyer do when it's not available?

Is there a checklist of things I should be looking for?
I understand that most of these cars have over 75k and likely near 100k on the clock thus I might be looking at other people's problems, just trying to know the problems before expensive repairs surface.

Thanks.

Spend the money for a professional Indy inspection. Here in the Portland area one small company uses some high tech methods to spot problems. Saved me from buying a BMW headache from a dishonest seller.

With no documentation, the most important things to look at with at 75K+ MINI are lubricating fluids-engine and gear box, spark plugs, bushings, strut tower mushrooming and bushings, brake discs and pads, upper engine mount. Give the canvas a good treatment with either Ragg Topp or 303 at least twice a year. Check your oil every time you refuel for both level and condition. Change the oil and rotate the tires every 5K. Beyond all that, the most important thing to do with it is get it on the road and go motoring, topless at best. To help with 'motoring', visit http://www.motorcycleroads.us/index.html
Also, look for a MINI club in your area and get acquainted. MINI clubs are listed on the Club Directory. There will be a wealth of knowledge to draw from there and will help you find a reliable independent BMW/MINI shop. Oh, and don't forget to go motoring.

I would really be worried about the transmission condition and factor in some kind of adjustment to the price for a fluid change at minimum. This would be on top of any other issues you find with the car after a professional inspection.

Took a test drive today, 06 S with 92k, first time driving a mini vert, had many others verts throughout life, was surprised how high the rear seats sit thus reducing rear visibility, and how large the rear view mirror thus reducing front visibility.

Still want one, just waiting for the right one.

Thanks guys.

Yep, visibility in the verts are a little limited, as it is with the Clubman. You'd get used to it.

Its not too bad , you get used to it and with the top down you get accustom to using the mirror and knowing when people are beside you.

One big help is the Factory MINI Euro blind spot mirrors which extend the viewing area.

Good quick , easy upgrade. Snap the old ones out and the new ones in.

Blind Spot Mirror - Set ( Eliminate your blind spots - Aspherical & Heated )

If you have the cold weather package with heated mirrors already you have two wires at each end to unplug and then plug into the new euro glass.

If you need any assistance with DIY you can check out our tech articles here that provide a great amount of literature about Mini's.
