Help me pick a car

Hey guys. Sold my FJ today and buying one of two Clubmans this weekend.

#1 2008 totally stock, loaded, auto, leather, 54k miles. $13k

#2 2008 modded with intake, wheels, tires, aftermarket exhaust, "suspension upgrades", etc. Leather. Loaded. 77k miles. $14k - much more aesthetically appealing.

Keep in mind I very much like to mod my vehicles, so with #2 the work is mostly done.

both sound good, but i'd go with #1 and try to talk them closer to 10k. Lower miles, + when you do the mods yourself you'll know they're done right! ( incase the other guy didn't) Either way welcome to the family!

I appreciate the input. I thing the cheaper one with 20K less miles is the obvious choice. It is at a dealer. I'm not sure I can talk them down that far but will do what I can and pocket the difference for mods! I like the interior much better in #1 also.

Question - are both of these base models?

A 2008 MINI Clubman S model means an N14 engine. Problems can include carbon buildup, the timing chain, and excessive oil consumption. If you're not going to do your own repairs, then I highly recommend you buy one that is covered under the MINI Next program, or has a warranty.

Also, if you buy either of these cars get into the habit of checking the oil level at least once every week or two.

Good luck!

I have been researching some and heard of the timing chain and carbon building issues. I am not clear on how common the issues actually are and if this should really keep me from purchasing the vehicle. I do my own maintenance and work for the most part. Is Mini fixing the timing chains under a recall or TSB?

The timing chain is under a tsb / recall by MINI. It is worth it to see if your tensioner or chain was ever replaced on both of these potential buys. You can check that with the VIN by calling MINI USA, or maybe a dealer.

As for the prevalence, canon buildup is inevitable on any direct injection vehicle, so just anticipate doing a walnut blasting every 30-45k or so. As for the timing chain, it's very hard to gauge to actually percent of cars that have had the problem. Here on NAM it seems like at least 50%, but remember this is a forum where generally people post or visit when problems occur. If your a DIY guy, then go for it!

I'm not the best guy to ask however, mine is a 2010 MCS hardtop with only 27k. Do yourself a favor, whichever you purchase, buy a cravenspeed dipstick ASAP. It will become your best friend everytime you check your oil (likely once a week)

Thank you for your time and wisdom. I'll check the VINs and take your advice.

Just gotta say, you're on the right track, but you're doing it wrong. "Sold my FJ"!! ah, no!! We (my family) have a two's problem. We have two FJ's and two MINI's.

#1 seems like a good deal, but it is auto, is #2 and auto or manual? I would pay more for a manual myself.

Good luck, either way you'll be happy.

Nik

Ha! The FJ was a great vehicle - modded and saw a lot of trail riding. I sold it for $100 less than what I paid for it 6.5 years ago!
I am partial to manual but my wife cannot drive one for some reason. She is much too excited about getting a MINI for me to get one she cannot drive. If it weren't for the paddle shifters, though, she would be SOL.

the biggest thing is keeping on top of the fluid levels, usually what happens is there will be a small issue and someone will either not care or forget to check then things get expensive. MINIs need just a bit more attention to details than other cars is all.

Car #1 has had the timing chain, tensioner, etc replaced by dealer even after measuring within spec. It has also had the heat shield and water pump recalls taken care of appropriately. Leaning towards that one. Buying this weekend.

sounds like a winner! I'd still get an extra warranty on either anyways just in case. (as long as it isn't too much $$$ extra)

Because you can do your own repairs, the 2008 Clubman S is an excellent car for you. Buy it (car #1) and have fun.

As for the warranty, if you're buying it from a MINI dealer, it should be a certified pre-owned car and it will be covered under MINI Next program. Is the car at a MINI dealer?

As stated there are better dipsticks on the market. Also, the C110 code scanner sells for around $50.00 on the internet. I'm not endorsing their product, but it could be a cost effective option for you...there are better scanners, but they will co$t you more money.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I bought #3! Yeah there were only two choices listed but I made an offer on another that was listed a little out of my price range and they accepted it. 2008 Clubman S. 52k miles. Loving it! Already ordered wheels and looking at exhaust!
