3 Minis this year

I have been reading the forum for a while now, thought I would intro Myself . Started in Jan with a 05 base model hardtop, two weeks later i worked out a up trade for a 07 base. Last month, i upgrade to a low mileage R53 i picked up in ATL.

I plan to keep this one for a while, and MOD! Sooner than later i hope.

Great Forum! lots of good info for newbies!

I've always wanted to know, when you purchase a car in the USA (I know this will vary by state) do you have to pay a transfer fee?

In Australia (at least in NSW) we pay 3% Stamp duty (ie tax) of the purchase price (5% if over $45K) which makes changing cars often unattrative.

It not only can vary from state to state but county to county within each state. In some locations you pay a sales tax only at dealers not on private sales. In some locations you also pay a property tax based on the value of the car. Then there is the registration fee and license plate fee, etc. Some of these are yearly fees.

EDIT: Where I live (town of Wake Forest, Wake County, North Carolina) Sales tax is ~3% on cars, yearly county tax is 0.53 cents per $100 of value, town/city tax is 0.51 cents per $100 of value. And the registration is $33. There is also a transfer fee of about $40. They get you every way they can.
