Still researching my purchase

Hi There,
My name's Brendan. I'm currently driving a '95 Honda Civic with 287,000 miles, and it's just about time to get rid of it. I want a car with at least as good, if not better, fuel economy (I'm seeing about 32 mpg), with better acceleration and sportiness. My research has led me to the MINI Cooper as possibly the only modern car that fits this bill.
I'm not in any rush to buy, so I want to take my time, gather lots of information, and wait for the perfect one to come along. I'm still not sure if I want the S, the sport suspension, the sunroof, or the bluetooth connection. I'm sure I'll be asking you folks all sorts of questions in all sorts of sub-forums over the next few days.
Thanks in advance for your help!

You will want the newer R56 for the best gas mileage. Reliable like a Honda, thats debatable.LOL It will be sportier and handle better. What are your plans for your new MINI when you get one?
Lots of good reading here

The car will be my daily driver to work and back. I live in a small canyon town in Southern California, and my 15-mile commute is 1/3 narrow mountain backroad, 1/3 two-lane highway, and 1/3 multi-lane city streets. I have no plans to race the car.
I don't need to haul lots of people or luggage, as my wife has a Prius for that, but I will want to bring my bike with me to work regularly. I have a roof rack on the Civic that would swap over with minimal modification.
Yes, I've been looking at 2nd gen exclusively. I do like the extra pep of the turbo, but I'm wondering if the extra complexity takes a toll on reliability. I had a salesman tell me to stay away from the first few years of turbo cars, as there were kinks that needed ironing out, but on the other hand, reliability is still top-notch as reported on MSN Autos.

I have a modded 2011 MCS. Here are the mods:

Akrapovic:
Down Pipe
Delete R
Alta Blow Off Valve Spring Upgrade
DoS CAI
Forge FMIC
Helix Short Shift Kit
Hella Black Magics (w/HID upgrade)
H-Sport Rear Camber Links
NGK Cold Heat Range Spark Plugs
NM Engineering:
ECU Tune
Aluminum Billet Tie-Bar
Discharge Pipe
Titanium Heat Shield
Torque Arm Insert
Shifter Assembly Box Cover
Quaife Limited Slip Differential (on 15 March)
TSW:
Performance Springs
19mm Sway Bar
X-Brace
VIP Custom:
Down Pipe Back Exhaust (last 1/4 powder coated black)
Driving Light Brackets
WMW:
Stainless Steel Brake Lines
Turbo Exhaust Manifold

I've not yet had a problem and after my ECU tune, my torq is mad and my MPG is better.

As a general rule, the second-gen MINIs are more reliable, but don't eliminate first-gen cars: they've got soul.
