Used 2008 Mini Cooper S

Hello,

I'm new to this forum and wanted to introduce myself. My name is David, I live in Georgia and I'm interested in purchasing a used Mini. A friend of mine suggested I look at a Mini and I must say I'm impressed.

It's a great car and has a loyal following from what I can glean. I've test driven four so far and I now have my eye on one in particular.

I haven't bought a used car in a while and when I looked at the AutoCheck report on this particular one it shows an accident in 2008. The description is "REAR IMPACT WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE" and "MODERATE DAMAGE REPORTED". It's a one owner, manual, 2008 Cooper S with 54K miles. I've test driven it and it seems to run fine but a friend that was with me heard a constant "ticking" sound from the engine. I didn't hear the same thing that he did but it's possible I was distracted by the Lighting Blue.

At any rate, I have an appointment to get a Pre-Purchase Inspection from a third party (not a dealer) that specializes in BMW / Mini service. Their checklist is quite extensive and should find any issues the car may have. I'm also thinking that since it had an accident four years and approximately 50K miles ago that it couldn't have been severe. I also realize the damage assigned is at the discretion of the person filling out the accident report.

They are offering me the car for $14,900 out the door.

I know some of you don't like people asking for opinions and I also know in the end it will be my decision and one that I have to live with...but...

What do you think?

Get a newer Mini something with the improved N18 engine if you can afford it.

The ticking sound is probably the direct injection. Good move to get an inspection. Make sure you get a measurement on the timing chain slack. Getting someone to read the key fob. It will tell you if it is up to date on recalls.
