Hello, we're thinking about picking up a 2008 cooper S 6MT. I'm reading the timing chain thread and there seems to be a bit of problem with it. But quite a few post points timing chain fails due to low oil level. Some say 2010 + models are better, with redesigned tensioner?

Also there is a TSB for this but not a recall? If the vehicle is not under any warranty and mini don't see any timing belt issue then they won't replace the tensioner? Should it be done as a out of pocket expense to prevent future problem?

 

It is not really clear yet whether the redesigned timing chain tensioners have solved the problems. It seems to be better based the reduction in number of complaints.

The problem will typically manifest itself as a loud rattling noise, often during "cold" starts but not necessarily only in that situation. The rattling is due to the chain being stretched, the stretching causing by the tensioner not working properly.

If you don't have any rattling, you could try to replace the existing tensioner as a preventive measure.

why do people recommend 2010+ models over 07-09? the tensioner should the same from waht I'm reading, the longer/extended tensioner is only a bandaid fix for stretched out chains

The 2008 model I'm interested in is low mileage, have under 30k miles
