I joined the site to learn about the Mini. My daughter wants one and I figured this would be a good place to find out about them.

I have an automotive background, and have owned a lot of cars and motorcycles over the years, but mostly muscle cars and V8 swaps.

We're in the Tallahassee, FL area and hopefully can find her a car she likes within her price range.

When shopping for an auto in a first gen MINI, the CVT used in the regular MINI has been troublesome if not maintained properly. The Aisin built 6 speed auto in all "S" models has been very reliable. Good luck!

Thanks. I'm afraid an "S" will be out of her price range. Are all "S" models automatic or how do I tell if it says 6 speed?

Speaking of bias, a 6 speed to me is a T56, such as the one I have in my Trans Am.

I believe 02-04 "S" models are only available in 6 speeds. 05-up can be either automatic or manual in "S" models. In non-S models, they are 5 speeds if they are manual (at least 2002-2004 models) But yes, the CVT automatic transmission is known for going bad. It's a $7,000 fix, too. That's why I learned how to drive a manual, and I love it!

Wow- 7 grand exceeds the book value of those we are looking at. I have priced a few junkyard engines & transaxles and they are likewise out of sight. My bias again- I have an $800 Toyota with a $400 late model 5.3L Chevy V8 from a junkyard in it. The Tremec TKO manual transmission I bought for it new was only $1600.
