Hello folks & re high engine temps

R56calc here, Portland Or. have an' 08 hardtop and noticed over the past
15 months or so, the engine cooling fan would "cycle", inferring high coolant
temp - always wondered... About a month ago, had electronic water temp & oil press guages installed. What a shock... at freeway speeds, cruising 10 min. or more, the guage indicates 210'F to 230'F cycles every 3-4 min. Concerned this might result in an oil-breakdown issue, I checked out NAM (as a guest like I usually do - didn't think I ever had much to offer), and discovered the high temps aren't exclusive to my little beast. First Mini, long commutes and mileage were my motivation -averaging 34.5mpg, enjoying the car so much, am considering another for the wife. Next for mine will be a supplimental engine fan though.
So, thanks for all the info over the past year or so.

Yes the little beastie does tend a little to the high wide temp wise, but it seems to be OK

High Temp Problems Here, Too

My 06 mini has just started this in the past few days. Runs very hot and doesn't give any heat when this happens. The cooling fan has stayed on twice after turning my mini off. The overflow was empty so I figured it needed some coolant, but when I finally found coolant that listed mini's it really didn't need that much. Any experienced mini owners who know what might be going on? It's too cold to go without heat right now, and I had been bragging to everyone how cozy warm my mini is before this happened. Still love my mini, though.

I have a Scangauge, and the normal water temp for my '08 S is 225. Sounds like yours is fine.

I run about 230, from what I understand, it's all controlled by the ECM, so a supplemental fan wouldn't do much good. A little scary, but BMW wizards seem to have it figured out. Good luck.

Your '06 is a gen1 mini...an entirely different beast...different motor desgin, and very different operation.
There are a few issues on gen1 mini's having to do with the fan operation,..a resistor fails, allowing the car to run hotter since thevlow speed portion of the 2 speed, single fan nolonger runs....
The fact you also lack heat also points to a possible issue with an airbubble, bad heater core, mixer doors under the dash beaing stuck, or even a bad temp sensor...
A bit of an odd combo of symptoms...a scanguage so you could read the actual temp the car is at, and when it cycles would give you useful info!!
