I'm not trying to make light or make fun of the poverty. But just from looking at the photograph, it looks like the protesters burnt that kid's classic Mini.

 

I just saw this too, and thought the same exact thing! Quite possible for a British car of that age to be floating around Africa too. The picture was taken in a country called Mozambique; some Wikipedia skillz says it was originally a Portuguese country...but things move across borders with ease there, maybe he got it in a barter
