New to MINI
Hello to all,
I picked up my new (to me) mini yesterday:
Its a 2005 MCS, 6spd manual, with only 17,000 on it. Its my new DD, and I love it! In 36 hours I've put about 200 miles on it already (a 1/4 of it driving it home from the city). I just don't want to get out of it. I've already got a friend buggin me to take it to autox, I'm just am a little apprehensive because its got the mini recertified warranty and I don't want to void it, by doing so. Anyway i'm going to have fun with it and I'm sure I'll be buggin most of you with questions in the coming months.
Justin

congrats and Happy New Year!
ya gotta do what ya gotta do, but here's a data point from the dark side
2004 MCS, 121k miles - no breakage ever (normal wear items only I mean)
SCCA AutoX, 12 events per year in '04, '05, '06, '07, '08 and heading for '09
So that's about 60 events - assume 5 runs/event that's 300 runs. Assume an average course length of .9 miles and duration of 50 seconds that's a stunning 4 hours on an autocross course in five years. Total distance in competition 240 miles. As a percentage of total miles traveled that is about 0.19%.
Since I have so much fun on course, and since the limits of the Mini can only be safely reached in such a setting, I have no regrets (and no horror stories).
A rear wheel driver ( or all wheel drive ) can hurt the clutch in 300 launches, but our Minis just spin the tires a bit. Brakes are wear items, but the course rarely uses them as much as a spirited drive on a canyon or country road. The tires of course are a different matter, but even there I have been running one set of AutoX tires as "summer wear" for the last three seasons which I would have done anyway even if only driving on public roads.
If you try it, I hope you have as much fun as I do.
If you don't, I hope the motoring side of it is as delightful for you as it has been for me.
Either way, welcome.
Cheers,
Charlie
