I'm new!

As a very happy new owner of a 2007 Chili Red, I'm trying to learn all about it and be smart. Silly me, I assumed the dealer was a nice guy and I really didn't need to change the oil for 15,000 miles, until my local custom mini guy enlightened me. If I have him change the oil, will the dealer punish me and not give me the free oil change at 15,000, or will he not be able to tell that it was changed, and if he does, does it matter? I did read many of your responses about it, but still am not quite clear.

Welcome!!!

I love your choice of colors!

You are aware that red is the fastest Mini out there, right? Don't let anyone tell you different, they'll be lying. (this should generate some off topic posting here for sure)

I had my Hubby change my oil at just a little over 3500 miles. Yes, I know what they say about the 15,000 thing, but my thoughts are that they also want to see you back to purchase another car. In their minds, sooner is better within reason. My dealership will still honor the free oil change, but I don't think I'm going to take them up on it. The Hubby does a much better job, I don't have to worry about the doors being dinged, too much oil being put in (yes, there are threads here about that one), etc., etc.

If you want to get the oil changed before the first scheduled maintenance, go ahead. Can't hurt since it's the break in oil. But some people have sent their oil to analysis and it's fine after several thousand miles or more.

If you do your own oil changes after that, I say you're wasting your money. Synthetic oil and a good filter, along with BMW engineers who have done tests, is enough for me.

And welcome to NAM and congrats on your new MINI ! CR Rules ! But PW and JB are pretty cool, too.

Welcome the NAM forum, great car and great colour choice! How many miles do you have on the car currently?

I hate to contradict but it is a well known and scientifically proven fact that Pepper White MINIs are the fastest due to reflection of solar energy and therefore reduced intergalactic drag coefficient.

Congrats on getting a MINI and making a most excellent color choice. If you haven't already done so, you might like to join the Chili Red Owners Club (CROC) whose thread is located in the forum General MINI Talk which is located right below this 1st Gear forum.

It's been said before, you can't have too many CROCs. I'm pretty sure CR outnumbers the other, and lesser, colors.

Enjoy the motoring!

My dealer is doing an unscheduled oil change for me after brake-in (but not free). I have about 2200 miles on it now. After that I'll mostly do an oil change about every 8000 miles or so. It certainly doesn't need to be done more often than that. The old 3000 mile rule serves no practical purpose where contemporary cars with synthetic oil are concerned, except to keep Jiffy Lube in business.
